(aka "Ferdinando and Carolina" )
directed by Lina Wertmüller
Italy 1997
In Ferdinando and Carolina (1999),
Lina Wertmuller turns her gimlet eye to the 18th century, and
hilarity ensues. In the dazzling court of 18th century Naples,
against their wishes, young King Ferdinando (Sergio Assisi) will
wed Carolina (Gabriella Pession), the sweet 16-year-old daughter
of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. As the monarchies of Europe
hold their breath, something unexpected happens. King Ferdinando
and Carolina share one common interest a rollicking, orgiastic
celebration of the senses, and plunge with gusto into the silken
bed sheets to uphold their regal duties. As the court continues
on with magnificent splendor, the sovereigns continue to reign,
oblivious to the revolutionary tides that are on the verge of
tearing France apart and overtaking all of Europe. *** The life and times of Italy's King Ferdinand are played for laughs in this comic historical piece directed by Lina Wertmuller. Set in the 18th century, Ferdinando E Carolina opens with the aging Ferdinand falling ill and being taken to his bed, with his life story told in flashback. A naturally rambunctious and impetuous child, Ferdinand grows to young adulthood and is poised to take over the crown at 16. The powers behind the throne have arranged a marriage with a princess from Austria (despite the fact that Ferdinand has already taken a lover), but she dies of smallpox before the wedding can take place; her sister is next proposed as a fitting mate, but then she dies as well. When a third sister, Maria Carolina, is presented, Ferdinand is decidedly unenthusiastic, given the family's track record on the path to the altar. But when Ferdinand's advisors (and Carolina's mother) start to lean on him, he agrees, and he soon discovers on their honeymoon that he and Carolina get along famously in the bedroom, if nowhere else. While Ferdinand is never quite cured of his roving eye, Carolina soon has the King under her spell, and her political power soon rivals his own. While much of the cast of Ferdinando E Carolina (aka Ferdinand and Carolina) are newcomers, veteran Italian film stars Silvana De Santis and Mario Scaccia appear in supporting roles. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were obtained directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Kino - Region 'A' - Blu-ray October 17': Kino's new Blu-ray is another of the restored Wertmuller transfers. It shows the 1.64:1 DVD to be very cropped with significantly more information on the side edges of the 1.85:1 1080P. Colors are warmer and richer with the Campania, Sicily and Turin locations and extensive set pieces looking impressive via Blasco Giurato's (Cinema Paradiso) cinematography. Kino use a DTS-HD Master (24-bit) 2.0 channel transfer for the audio - in the original Italian. There are a few effects carrying some depth and a supportive score credited to the trio of Italo Greco, Paolo Raffone and Marcello Vitale. There are optional English subtitles on the Region 'A'-locked Blu-ray disc. Not much in the way of extras - some Lina Wertmüller trailers and the package has a booklet with essay by Simon Abrams. An often-ribald period piece - both fascinating and fun. Point of interest - this was produced by Giallo queen Edwige Fenech (All the Colors of the Dark, Five Dolls For An August Moon, Strip Nude for Your Killer, The Strange Vice of Mrs. WardH, The Case of the Bloody Iris). The Blu-ray is recommended to Wertmuller fans. -Gary + Eric |
