Directed by Frank Darabont
USA 1990

From Frank Darabont, the acclaimed director of The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Majestic and The Mist, comes this gripping thriller starring Tim Matheson (Jonny Quest, National Lampoon's Animal House, A Very Brady Sequel etc), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Rush, Washington Square, eXistenZ, Kansas City), William Atherton (The Day of the Locust) and Hoyt Axton (The Black Stallion). Clint Goodman (Matheson) enjoys the simple life he’s created in the small town where he grew up. However, his wife (Leigh) yearns for a more glamorous existence and begins an affair with the local doctor, who offers her a sinister but seemingly perfect way out. But the illicit couple’s insatiable greed produces some grave consequences that lead to a heart-pounding conclusion. With a teleplay by Mark Patrick Carducci (Pumpkinhead), based on a story by David A. Davies (Gas Pump Girls), Buried Alive is an engrossing suspense tale with stylish direction and fine performances that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the final frame.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (January 2021): Kino have transferred Frank Darabont's Buried Alive to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "Brand New 2K Master". Colors are quire vibrant and detail reasonably tight. The image quality in 1080P is consistent in the original 1.33:1 - no damage or marks - no issues and a decent HD presentation of a TV movie.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original English language. There is some aggression and a wicked thunder storm plus a score by Michel Colombier (Un Flic, Colossus: The Forbin Project, Une Chambre en Ville, Barb Wire, Against All Odds) supporting the suspenseful aspects of the film very well. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by author Bryan Reesman who rapid-fire discusses the psychological thriller and horror aspects of Frank Darabont's debut feature, cinematographer Jacques Haitkin, Hoyt Axton's extensive musical career, as well as facts on Jennifer Jason Leigh (her amazing memory of knowing every line in the film), Tim Matheson etc. about pufferfish containing tetrodotoxin (enough poison in one fish to kill 30 humans) and referencing The Simpsons episode with that featured prominently... and much more. He exports a lot and goes all over the place - very enjoyable. There are also some trailers and its in a nice slipcase.

Frank Darabont's Buried Alive obviously isn't as polished as his later features (although has atmosphere evocative of The Mist), but you can see some of the director's effective storytelling - even in this slap-dash quickly produced TV movie. I liked the 'mood' and the lead performances; Matheson, Jason Leigh, Atherton and Axton. The Kino Blu-ray was a popcorner viewing - expectations were low and it was pleasing, if purposely lacking back-story details. It's a relatively satisfying keeper for me - there is certainly value here.
