ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): There were some releases I really enjoyed this week. Seeing Stanley Kubrick's The Shining in 4K UHD added another impressive layer to this iconic horror. There is so much in The Shining that I do tend to notice scenes or shots that I never recall from previous viewings. This is one of the marks of a masterpiece. It's a reason to indulge in the new UHD format. Indicator's Blu-ray of Joseph Losey's Time Without Pity. This is a key British Noir - an innocent man is sentenced to death for murder and his estranged father races against the clock to prove his innocence. Brilliant. Alan Parker's Birdy - a fun and still deep film probing relationships, mental illness, maturity, war etc.. The Indicator's Blu-ray package, with commentary, is the way to go to own this memorable piece of unique 80s cinema. The epic bio-pic Richard Attenborough's Young Winston comes to Blu-ray. It's a very well-crafted historical film - a massive production - and I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Howard W. Koch's Badge 373 has Robert Duvall as a tough, no-nonsense, abrasive Irish cop - a neglected and gritty police thriller from the early 70s. It gets some much-deserved Blu-ray love from Indicator in the UK. I had some fun with Zoltan... Hound of Dracula - it has Jose Ferrer as a Transylvanian vampire-hunter in modern Los Angeles. Nu'ff said? Kino transfers it to Blu-ray with a new commentary. The early canuxploitation-cum-beatnick film The Bloody Brood gets an HD presentation on Kino Blu-ray - that also offers a commentary and other new and old extras. Colin reviewed Greg Mottola's The Daytrippers on Criterion Blu-ray. With its droll humor and bittersweet emotional heft a new generation of audiences will get exposed to its brilliance - loaded with extras. BFI bring the fascinating X-rated documentary Legend of the Witches. It is described as "a visual exploration into the origins of witchcraft in the UK and in particular the demystification of symbolism still embedded today within many modern religious artefacts and rituals."

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Daytrippers BD - With its droll humor and bittersweet emotional heft, the feature debut of writer-director Greg Mottola announced the arrival of an unassumingly sharp-witted new talent on the 1990s indie film scene. When she discovers a love letter written to her husband (Stanley Tucci) by an unknown paramour, the distraught Eliza (Hope Davis) turns to her tight-knit Long Island family for advice. Soon the entire clan—strong-willed mom (Anne Meara), taciturn dad (Pat McNamara), and jaded sister (Parker Posey) with pretentious boyfriend (Liev Schreiber) in tow—has squeezed into a station wagon and headed into Manhattan to find out the truth, kicking off a one-crazy-day odyssey full of unexpected detours and life-changing revelations. Performed with deadpan virtuosity by a top-flight ensemble cast, The Daytrippers is a wry and piercing look at family bonds stretched to the breaking point. Blu-ray Release Date: November 12th, 2019

Young Winston BD - Writer-producer Carl Foreman was approached by Churchill himself, who suggested his own book, My Early Life: A Roving Commission, would make a good film. The result is a lavish and beautifully detailed drama, with Simon Ward in the lead role, detailing Churchill’s service as a cavalry officer in India and the Sudan, as a war correspondent in the Second Boer War, and his election to Parliament at the age of 26. Forman and Attenborough assembled a sterling cast in support: Robert Shaw, Anne Bancroft, Jack Hawkins, Ian Holm, Anthony Hopkins, Patrick Magee, Edward Woodward, and John Mills add weight to Attenborough’s vision of the man and the myth. Blu-ray Release Date: October 28th, 2019

Zoltan... Hound of Dracula BD - When soldiers foolishly remove a stake from a mysterious Transylvanian grave, they release a vampire dog belonging to the Dracula clan. Also freed is Veidt-Smit (Reggie Nalder), an old servant of the Count himself, not quite a vampire, but immortal all the same: he can work in the daylight. Together, the blood-sucking dog and he go to the U.S. in search of Michael Drake (Michael Pataki), who is the last of the Dracula family line and who has no notion that there is anything strange in his family tree. Meanwhile, they are being followed by a Transylvanian vampire-hunter, Inspector Branco (Jose Ferrer). Blu-ray Release Date: October 22nd, 2019

Birdy BD - Based on the acclaimed, ‘unfilmable’ novel by William Wharton, about a boy who dreams of flying, Alan Parker’s elliptical, ethereal film is just as vividly poetic as its source. Birdy is story of two unlikely boyhood friends, the confident and popular Al (Nicolas Cage) and Birdy (Matthew Modine), awkward, withdrawn, and obsessed with birds. The advent of the war in Vietnam shatters their youth, and they both return irrevocably changed – one physically traumatized, the other emotionally fractured. Blu-ray Release Date: October 28th, 2019

Badge 373 BD - Inspired by the real-life exploits of New York cop Eddie Egan (who was also the basis for Gene Hackman’s ‘Popeye’ Doyle character in The French Connection), Badge 373 is a tough detective thriller, comparable to William Friedkin’s more celebrated feature. Duvall delivers a powerfully authentic performance as a brutal New York detective, ruthlessly hunting for the killer of his partner against a backdrop of social upheaval and violent gang wars. Indicator Blu-ray Release date: October 28th, 2019

Time Without Pity BD - When an innocent man is sentenced to death for murder, his father takes matters into his own hands. A day before his son's execution, Canadian writer David Graham (Michael Redgrave) delves into England's criminal underworld and turns to increasingly desperate measures in an 11th-hour attempt to uncover any scrap of evidence that may exonerate his condemned son. Graham's search begins at the luxurious home of automotive industry giant Robert Stanford (Leo McKern). Blu-ray Release Date: October 28th, 2019

The Bloody Brood BD - At the start of his film career and just a year before his appearance in Murder, Inc. would get him Academy Award notice, Peter Falk played Nico, the strung-out, emotionally dead psychopath who leads a group of societal misfits in this sick and slick, low-budget crime drama. Cliff (Jack Betts) is an ordinary young man determined to find out who murdered his kid brother by giving him a hamburger mixed with ground glass. Detective McLeod (Robert Christie), who is supposed to be investigating the case, is woefully inept, but Cliff has Ellie (Barbara Lord), a woman with problems of her own, willing to help him out. Eventually, the murder is traced to Nico and his henchmen as Cliff begins to sort out how the crime was committed. Although the dialogue is surface deep, just like the characters, the direction (Julian Roffman), the acting, and the repulsive nature of the content of this crime drama make up for any deficiencies. Blu-ray Release Date: October 15th, 2019

Legend of the Witches BD - Pagans - witches, if you will - believe that the world was formed when the goddess Diana was born, and seeking to find companionship other than her own reflection seen on the surface of water, her counterpart Lucifer was created to become her partner in the sky, thus were the moon and sun brought into being. There are still witches practicing their ceremonies to this day, and should you be invited to join a coven this documentary will detail what you would expect from an initiation ceremony as we watch this new convert in the woods, naked as the day he was born with other similarly nude participants, set on following the arcane rules of worship that have been passed down from ancient times... Blu-ray Release Date: October 14th, 2019

The Shining 4K UHD - All work and no play makes Oscar-winning actor Jack Nicholson-the caretaker of an isolated resort-go way off the deep end, terrorizing his young son and wife (Shelley Duvall). Nicholson plays Jack Torrance, who's come to the elegant, isolated Overlook Hotel as off-season caretaker. Torrance has never been there before-or has he? The answer lies in a ghostly time warp of madness and murder. 4K Ultra HD Release Date: June 4th, 2019
