The Complete Sartana - 5 Disc Set [Blu-ray]

If You Meet Sartana... Pray for Your Death (1968)             I Am Sartana, Your Angel of Death (1969)

Have a Good Funeral, My Friend... Sartana Will Pay (1970)

Light the Fuse... Sartana Is Coming (1970)        Sartana's Here... Trade Your Pistol for a Coffin (1970)

Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name spawned imitations, each providing their own twist on the Eastwood antihero, and each of them then subject to their own spate of unofficial sequels, spoofs and cash-ins.

Sartana tapped into more than just his Spaghetti Western predecessors a mysterious figure, he has a spectral quality, aided by his Count Dracula-alike cloak which also nods towards comic strip figure Mandrake the Magician, with whom he shares he shares a penchant for card tricks. He takes pride in his appearance unlike the Eastwood s dusty wanderer or Nero's mud-caked drifter. And there's a dose of James Bond too in his fondness for gadgetry and the droll sense of humour.

Comments:

Arrow's Blu-ray package of The Complete Sartana is quite a handful - to say the least. It has 5 of the series' films on their own dual-layered Blu-ray discs with max'ed out bitrates. I only saw some noticeable frame damage in the first "Pray For Your Death". Otherwise the visuals are reasonably clean without undue speckles on the remaining 4 films. There can be some inconsistency - but looks more like the production with some darker scenes looking saturated. Generally though the image quality - with rich colors and keen detail in close-ups will be greatly appreciated by fans of these stylistic 'pasta westerns'.

The Arrow Blu-rays all have audio transfers in DTS-HD Master 1.0 channel mono in both Italian and English DUBs. The resulting sounds are predictably flat with typical western effects (horses, guns) exporting some hollow depth. The film have a variety of score composers; on I Am Sartana, Your Angel of Death by Vasili Kojucharov (as Vasco - Django the Bastard) and Elsio Mancuso (Burial Ground), On Sartana's Here... Trade Your Pistol for a Coffin by Piero Piccioni (Two Mules For Alex, Fox With a Velvet Tail, Three Brothers, The 10th Victim, Adua and Her Friends, Hands Over the City, L'assassino, The Moment of Truth)  on Light the Fuse... Sartana Is Coming and Have a Good Funeral, My Friend... Sartana Will Pay by Bruno Nicolai (The Colors of the Dark, The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave, Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, Face to Face, The Perverse Countess, Torso, Ten Little Indians, Pasolini's Hawks and the Sparrows) The score on Sartana's Here... Trade Your Pistol for a Coffin is by Francesco De Masi (Kill Them All and Come Back Alone, The Murder Clinic, Private Vices, Public Virtues, The Hanging Woman, The New York Ripper) Generally the audio had predictably modest quality - very akin to the productions. It was fairly consistent for all five films and the original Italian tracks sounding a shade richer and deeper than the English DUBs. There are optional English subtitles available on the Region FREE Blu-ray disc.

There is plenty of supplemental material with audio commentaries on If You Meet Sartana... Pray for Your Death by filmmaker Mike Siegel and on I Am Sartana, Your Angel of Death and Have a Good Funeral My Friend... Sartana Will Pay by Spaghetti Western experts C. Courtney Joyner and Henry Parke. There is discussion of the James Bond link and plenty on the stars and actors as well as the impressive camerawork. Fans will appreciate the analysis. There are plenty of interviews - writer-director Gianfranco Parolini for 23-minutes on If You Meet Sartana... Pray for Your Death, actor Sal Borgese on I Am Sartana, Your Angel of Death and Light the Fuse... Sartana Is Coming (running over 20-minutes each.) There are also two interviews with writer Ernesto Gastaldi and an archival featurette on actor Gianni Garko and director Giuliano Carnimeo plus another new one entitled Sartana Shoots First with George Hilton on Sartana's Here... Trade Your Pistol for a Coffin plus separate interviews with Erika Blanc, Roberto Dell Acqua and Tony Askin. I also appreciated the visual essay on If You Meet Sartana... Pray for Your Death and on the major actors and supporting players in the official Sartana films, by Jonathan Bygraves running over 1/4 hour. Each disc has galleries of original promotional images from the 'Mike Siegal Archive' for all five films and the package has limited edition packaging with reversible sleeves featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Matthew Griffin and an illustrated collector's booklet featuring new writing on the films by Roberto Curti.

I really enjoyed these - they thrust me into a 'Spaghetti western' mode and there is a appealing continuity in the stories - all have poker, some repeat characters etc. Sartana is an iconic western protagonist and this package has amazing value for fans of this genre. Not totally similar to Django and fairly unique in its own right. Arrow's Blu-ray renderings are the best we will likely ever get and the extensive extras and commentaries add significant value. It overflows with desirability and we give it a very strong recommendation.
