ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Such a strong week, but as it is our first 4K Ultra HD, and after 10,000 disc reviews it stands as one of the best a/v presentations I've ever seen, Paramount's 4K Ultra HD of Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan will get first spot this newsletter. Along with a few other titles (The Bridge on the River Kwai: 60th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD) I am sold on this format. Wow - is an understatement. It is wonderful to see that Criterion have rectified the missteps of the previous Blu-rays for Víctor Erice's El Sur - regarded as one of the greatest films in Spanish cinema history and is a cinephile must-own. Ivan Passer's Intimate Lighting is one of the most important films of the Czech New Wave and fabulous to have on Second's Run's, Region FREE, Blu-ray edition. Fans have voiced their love, loudly, for John Waters' notorious Female Trouble - being given the Criterion Blu-ray treatment - perverse pleasures that never fail to satisfy. It was great to see Stephen Frears' neo-noir gem The Grifters in a stacked new Blu-ray package from 101 Films' new Black Label series. Sweet. More 4K Ultra HD with Nicolas Winding Refn's hypnotic The Neon Demon - a feast for your senses. Jacques Rivette's intimately epic exploration of the convergence between artistry and eroticism La Belle Noiseuse comes to Blu-ray from Cohen films looking significantly superior to the older hazy DVDs. A masterpiece. David Cronenberg's eXistenZ has a niche following - and many are pleased to have it on progressive Blu-ray - thanks to 101 Films' - second entry in their new Black Label series. It's one of the more overlooked twisted science-fiction / horror / thriller films steeped in the director's unique style. I loved Michio Yamamoto's The Vampire Doll (part of The Bloodthirsty Trilogy) on Blu-ray from Arrow - premium Japanese horror from the 1970s now in 1080P. Abdellatif Kechiche's Black Venus is a fascinating historical film also on Blu-ray from Arrow. A sad commentary on our species. Eric reviewed 4 DVDs this week; Have a Nice Day is a delightful animated comedy-crime story out of China. Rave Party Massacre is described as a hallucinogenic drug nightmare infused with illicit partying and forbidden sex, young ravers discover the murderous world of the DeadThirsty. Yes. House of Evil sounds more vintage with a couple moving to the countryside in old mansion that has secrets... Lastly, Cosi is a highly regarded musical comedy out of Australia.

'It’s never too late – never too late to start over, never too late to be happy..' - Jane Fonda

Have a surprisingly happy week!!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

El Sur BD - Estrella Arenas (Icíar Bollaín), a rural Spanish teenager with a rich imagination, dreams of her mysterious father Agustín (Omero Antonutti), a man who in recent years has drifted away from her. Estrella struggles to piece together Agustín's secret history and recalls her family's sudden unexplained move from Seville, Spain, to the northern countryside in her youth. Estrella decides to return alone to the South, a place warped by years of her father's hazy and nostalgic recollections. Exquisitely beautiful and profoundly moving, with superb performances and an evocative soundtrack, El Sur is regarded as one of the greatest films in Spanish cinema history. Criterion Blu-ray Release date: June 19th, 2018

La Belle Noiseuse BD - The Grand Prix winner at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival, La Belle Noiseuse (aka The Beautiful Troublemaker) is legendary French New Wave director Jacques Rivette's intimately epic exploration of the convergence between artistry and eroticism. Edouard Frenhofer (Michel Piccoli) is a reclusive painter living in the French countryside with his wife (French cultural icon Jane Birkin). Their lives are radically upended with the arrival of a younger artist (David Bursztein) and his girlfriend (Emmanuel Beart), who becomes the muse that awakens Edouard's fading passions. Rivette creates a layered character study, while also offering an immersive meditation on the creative process. Blu-ray Release Date: May 8th, 2018

The Neon Demon (4K Ultra HD) - An aspiring 16-year-old model (Elle Fanning) moves to Los Angeles, where she quickly finds success after she is discovered by a makeup artist (Jena Malone) and signed by an agent (Christina Hendricks). However, her beauty also draws the attention of lecherous men, and provokes the jealousy of other women in showbiz. Bella Heathcote, Abbey Lee, and Keanu Reeves co-star. Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, The Neon Demon made its world premiere at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. 4K Ultra HD Release Date: November 10th, 2016

Intimate Lighting BD - Ivan Passer completed only one feature film before the changing political climate forced him out of Czechoslovakia, but this 1965 gem stands as one of the finest works of the short-lived Czech New Wave. A successful symphony musician comes to a small town to visit an old school friend, who has settled into teaching music at the local academy and playing an occasional funeral. Out of these drab elements, Passer has forged something funny and rare: a genuine comedy of melancholy--a gray comedy. Blu-ray Release Date: May 7th, 2018

Saving Private Ryan (4K Ultra HD) - Spielberg's meticulous period detail effectively re-creates the war-torn countryside of occupied France. The American soldiers visit two bombed-out towns where all that remains standing are the half-shattered husks of once-impressive structures. Many of the weapons that appear in Saving Private Ryan are authentic period pieces, bought from collectors. And, following the successful landing at Normandy, we are treated to a spectacular panorama of the beach, with a variety of mighty ships anchored offshore and the sky thick with blimps. Even though the Omaha Beach sequences were filmed in Ireland, they nevertheless offer a sense of verisimilitude that those familiar with the actual place on the English Channel shore will find hard to dispel. 4K Ultra HD Release Date: May 8th, 2018

Female Trouble BD - Glamour has never been more grotesque than in Female Trouble, which injects the Hollywood melodrama with anarchic decadence. Divine, director John Waters’ larger-than-life muse, engulfs the screen with charisma as Dawn Davenport—who progresses from a teenage nightmare hell-bent on getting cha-cha heels for Christmas to a fame monster whose egomaniacal impulses land her in the electric chair—in the ultimate expression of the film’s lurid mantra, “Crime is beauty.” Blu-ray Release Date: June 26th, 2018

The Vampire Doll (part of The Bloodthirsty Trilogy) BD - It not only made me jump a couple of times, but I found the backstory to be fascinating, powerful and sad. It’s the only one of the series that really caught my attention and held it. Unfortunately, it also seems to be the hardest one to find, but for those interested in an unusual twist to the vampire story, this one should fill the bill. Blu-ray Release Date: May 21st - 22nd, 2018

eXistenZ BD - During a closed-door demonstration of her new virtual reality video game, brilliant game designer Allegra Geller (Leigh) survives an attempt on her life by a crazed assassin. On the run with Ted Pikul (Law), a young marketing trainee who falls into the role of bodyguard, Allegra convinces Ted to join her in her game, eXistenZ. As the line between fantasy and reality begins to blur, the real-life dangers they sought to escape start to merge with their virtual world. Blu-ray Release Date: May 21st, 2018

Black Venus BD - Baartman was taken from South African home as a 21-year-old and shipped to Georgian London, where she would be caged and exhibited as a freak show. Presented semi-nude, her physique especially her large buttocks was the source of much curiosity. But as her fame spread, so too did her exploitation... Blu-ray Release Date: May 21st, 2018

The Grifters BD - Director Stephen Frears' tense adaptation of Jim Thompson's novel The Grifters was one of a number of revival film noirs in the first half of the '90s. Updating the setting to contemporary Los Angeles, the film follows a trio of con artists who are intent on out-foxing each other. Roy Dillon (John Cusack) is a simple, two-bit con, whose life is thrown into turmoil when his estranged mother Lilly (Anjelica Huston) returns home in an attempt to evade the law. Lilly doesn't warm to Roy's girlfriend Myra Langtry (Annette Bening), who is too similar to herself. Soon, the two women are competing for Roy in a battle that is more of a power struggle than a pursuit of affection, and the battle quickly turns dangerous. 101 Films Blu-ray Release Date: May 21st, 2018

Cosi - Ben Mendelsohn stars as Lewis Riley an unemployed young man who applies for a job as a director/drama teacher at a mental hospital. He lands the job and finds himself directing a production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Cosi an elaborate demanding piece of theatre an opera in Italian. And it is going to be performed by a cast that he must select from among the patients who only speak English. DVD Release Date: March 7th, 2018

House of Evil - "Inspired by true events" and set in the seventies, John (Andrew Harwood Mills) and Kate (Lucy Drive) move into a large house in the countryside where she can paint, he can take photographs, and they can raise a family. It is not long before he is having nightmares (waking with a spreading rash on his neck) and she is having hallucinations of a dark figure that finds its way into her art. DVD Release Date: May 6th, 2018

Rave Party Massacre - It is 1992, three days after the presidential inauguration, and some are fighting Bush Sr.'s "New World Order" with protest and others are toasting it with a rave at an abandoned hospital. Feeling hopelessly smothered by her boyfriend Branson (Jared Sullivan) - one of the "thousand points of light" until Ruby Ridge, and a budding Neo-Nazi since - Rachel (Sara Bess) just wants to enjoy herself. As the rave drones on and on, someone is lurking around in a fox mask and drugging victims (which isn't hard at a rave since everyone who is not on something wants to be just to make the music bearable). After hooking up with Thomas (Pedro Ferreira), Rachel wakes up the next morning in a morgue drawer. DVD Release Date: April 17th, 2018

Have a Nice Day - "Without technology, we just can't win," says a character late in this film, and that is just what mob driver Xiao Zhang (voiced by Changlong Zhu) discovers when he impulsively steals a million dollar payment from his boss Uncle Liu (voiced by Siming Yang) due to his associate Brother Biao (voiced by Yuexin Yang) in order for his girlfriend to get plastic surgery in South Korea to fix a previousy botched procedure. DVD Release Date: April 24th, 2018
