(aka "Have a Nice Day " or "Hao jile" )
directed by Jian Liu
China 2017
"Without technology, we just can't win," says a character late in this film, and that is just what mob driver Xiao Zhang (voiced by Changlong Zhu) discovers when he impulsively steals a million dollar payment from his boss Uncle Liu (voiced by Siming Yang) due to his associate Brother Biao (voiced by Yuexin Yang) in order for his girlfriend to get plastic surgery in South Korea to fix a previousy botched procedure. Discarding his GPS-tracked car and the Sim card from his phone, butcher/assassin Skinny is able to track him by his internet usage and set up a trap that his girlfriend's money-hungry cousin Gu Anan (Hong Zhu) and her wannabe gangster boyfriend with dreams of starting a life in Shangri La (which they believe is real after hearing about it in a song). Xiao loses the money when he is kidnapped by former gang boss Yellow Eye whose antipathy to high technology proves his failing when he attempt to take out a traffic camera with a metal hammer in the middle of a thunderstorm. When Yellow Eye's girlfriend runs off with the cash, she unfortunately appeals to the wrong person for help, and sets up the climax in which all the characters quite literally collide. In live action, HAVE A NICE DAY would be a quirky but ordinary crime thriller, but director Jian Liu's medium of animation effortlessly turns the film into a strikingly-designed Neo Noir universe that might have been more cumbersome to create with actual locations, props, and people. The end result is simplistic in narrative but ravishing to the eye. |

Comments |
Strand Releasing give a high-bitrate, dual-layer encode to this short animated feature, maintaining not so much fine detail but fine lines and variegations of color where used. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track is surprisingly conservative for an animated film, although it is really in keeping with the noir feel with sparse atmosphere, score, and some directional effects. The optional subtitles are free of any obvious errors. The only extras are the film's trailer and trailers for four other Strand titles. |
