BIG THANKS!: DVDBeaver would not exist without the support of many patrons - those who generously donate, and especially those who use our Amazon(s), Barnes & Noble, TCM, Warner Archive and YesAsia links. That's it. When you go to Amazon - PLEASE use one of our links to get there (they are on every page - top and bottom - and we have 5000 webpages). It costs you absolutely nothing and we get a small commission on items you purchase. This helps pay our bills - in fact it's the only thing that pays our bills.
STRATEGIES: The best way to take full advantage of Amazon is to use...
PRE-ORDERs - lock in at the discount price by ORDERING - if perchance you decide against the purchase you have until the release date to cancel - at no charge AND if you will purchase more than 35 DVDs (or anything) in a 365 day period (and live in the Continental US) it makes excellent financial sense to subscribe to Amazon Prime

ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I really enjoyed Arrow's Blu-ray of Joseph H. Lewis' So Dark the Night with the commentary and Imogen Sara Smith's analysis an additional supplement. A real keeper of a Noir that can be revisited often. Douglas Sirk's The Tarnished Angels is a film of many layers that can be appreciated by watching again. Kino's Blu-ray offers a new commentary that emboldens understanding and enjoyment. I've always loved The Mole People despite it being as silly as it is - the new Shout! Factory Blu-ray has value with commentary, and extras including the full Mystery Science Theatre 3000 episode. In a similar vein I also liked the Blu-ray of The Vengeance of She which likewise includes a commentary - and a fun one to boot. It's an adventure-fantasy that doesn't live up to billing (or posters) but Olinka Berova may be worth the time invested. Jamil Dehlavi's Immaculate Conception has a very interesting premise and always-competent Indicator expose it to Blu-ray fans. Tokyo Decadence has a lot of 'kink' and the story is revealing - Turbine's new Blu-ray is, by far, the best way to watch it in your home theatre - if you can tolerate the 'perversions'. ..

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Tarnished Angels BD - One of legendary director Douglas Sirk’s most cherished passion projects, this spectacular adaptation of William Faulkner’s Pylon has risen in stature to become one of his most acclaimed films. Reuniting with his core creative team from oil tycoon saga Written on the Wind, Sirk this time examined the marginal lives and lost souls living one rung from the bottom with surpassing delicacy and artistry. Rock Hudson stars as journalist Burke Devlin, fascinated by the sordid lives of a trio eking out a living in carnival circuit daredevil airshows – Roger Shumann (Robert Stack), former WWI fighter pilot, forced into races and parachute routines with the help of his wife LaVerne (Dorothy Malone), and faithful mechanic Jiggs (Jack Carson). Kino Blu-ray Release Date: March 26th, 2019

Immaculate Conception BD - A Western couple (played by Melissa Leo and James Wilby) working in Pakistan visit an unconventional holy shrine to harness its spiritual powers to help them conceive a child. They are lavished with the attentions of the shrine’s leader (an exceptional performance from Zia Mohyeddin) and her followers, but their methods and motives are not all that they seem, and the couple’s lives are plunged into darkness. This ravishing, unsettling film from director Jamil Dehlavi is a deeply personal work which raises questions of cultural and sexual identity, religious fanaticism and the abuses of power. Blu-ray Release Date: March 25th, 2019

The Vengeance of She BD - A young beautiful woman named Carol (Olinka Berova) is plagued by hallucinatory voices calling her "Ayesha" and is drawn by a mysterious force toward the east. During her voyage, she meets Dr. Philip Smith (Edward Judd) who decides to accompany Carol to her unknown destination. Eventually the two reach the lost city of Kuma where Carol is greeted as the reincarnation of Queen Ayesha, the beloved of King Killikrates (John Richardson). Philip is imprisoned and meets Za-Tor (Noel Willman) who tells him of the high priest's deceitful plan to obtain the secret of immortality by bringing back Ayesha to King Killikrates. Will Philip escape in time to reveal the truth and save Carol from destruction? Blu-ray Release Date: December 4th, 2019

Tokyo Decadence BD - After a particularly rough session, prostitute Ai (Miho Nikaido) consults a fortune teller who advises her to do three things to safeguard herself: 1) place a telephone directory under her television set, 2) avoid art galleries in the east, and 3) find a pink stone and have it made into a ring. Still pining for her celebrity ex-boyfriend who left the country six months before and has since returned without contacting her, Ai is eager to try anything to better her life. Ai puts the phone books under her television, is not planning to travel anytime soon, and buys an expensive topaz ring. Blu-ray Release Date: April 20th, 2018

The Mole People BD - John Agar (Attack Of The Puppet People), Hugh Beaumont (Leave It To Beaver) and Nestor Paiva (Creature From The Black Lagoon) star as three archaeologists who come upon an unusual race of albino beings who shun all forms of light and have mutant mole men as their slaves. Because of their "magical cylinders of fire", (what we know as flashlights), these archaeologists are treated like gods until they try to liberate the mole people. Can the archaeologists escape this hallowed mountain in Asia ... or will they be destroyed in a strange underground world. Shout! Factory Blu-ray Release Date: February 26th, 2019

So Dark the Night BD - Like his contemporaries Howard Hawks and Billy Wilder, Joseph H. Lewis (Gun Crazy) dabbled in many genres, but excelled in the film noir tradition. A Hitchcockian tale of mystery and intrigue, So Dark the Night was one of his finest pictures. Inspector Cassin, a renowned Paris detective, departs to the country for a much-needed break. There he falls in love with the innkeeper s daughter, Nanette, who is already betrothed to a local farmer. On the evening of their engagement party, Nanette and the farmer both disappear. Cassin takes up the case immediately to discover what happened to them and who is responsible. Blu-ray Release Date: February 18th, 2019
