Directed by Tony Bill
USA 1993

Marisa Tomei (Oscar, My Cousin Vinny) and Christian Slater (Heathers, True Romance) deliver brilliant performances in this touchingly honest and beautifully crafted modern-day love story. Tomei portrays Caroline, a diner waitress who is consistently and miserably unlucky at love. Slater is Adam, the diner’s busboy who harbors a secret crush on Caroline, yet is too shy to speak to her. But all that changes one cold night, when Caroline finds herself in a life-threatening situation on her walk home and Adam appears out of the shadows to rescue her. Intrigued by her unlikely knight in shining armor, Caroline tenderly breaks through to his lonely world. Together, the two forge a bond of trust and understanding that ultimately blossoms into one of cinema’s most unforgettable love stories. Wonderfully directed by Tony Bill (My Bodyguard, Five Corners) with a screenplay by Tom Sierchio (The Girl Who Invented Kissing). Co-starring Rosie Perez (White Men Can’t Jump, Do the Right Thing), who lends her own unique brand of energy and talent to this romantic classic.

More than a decade after 1982's Six Weeks, director Tony Bill once again explored romance, sentimentality, and dying young with Untamed Heart. The film stars Christian Slater as Adam, an shy and awkward busboy who saves waitress Caroline (Marisa Tomei) from being raped in a park late one night. Naturally, the two begin to fall in love. As their relationship progresses, Caroline discovers that Adam has a heart defect, though he claims he has a baboon heart. Rosie Perez also stars as Cindy, Caroline's sassy comic-relief-providing co-worker.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Kino Lorber present one of the great Hollywood tear-jerkers of the 1990s, Untamed Heart. The Blu-ray is on a single-layered disc with a supportive bitrate. It looks heavy and reasonably film-like, clean (only a very few speckles) and the colors have subtle richness. It is in the original 1.85:1 aspect ratio and the thick look seems authentic and the HD presentation of Untamed Heart is consistent looking quite pleasing in-motion.

Untamed Heart is transferred in DTS-HD Master 2.0 stereo (16-bit) with only a couple of minor aggressive moments and a less-frequently-used score credited to Cliff Eidelman, but the film's other music is central to the story with songs such as Nat 'King' Cole's Nature Boy, Suzanne Vega 's Tom's Diner, Stacy Earl 's Blood From A Stone, Morning Star Schott's Minstrel Boy and others that keep the film real - and sentimental at times. The audio sounds strong via the lossless. There are optional English (SDH) subtitles - see sample below - on this Region 'A'
Blu-ray.

Kino have added a new audio commentary by director Tony Bill moderated by filmmaker Douglas Hosdale. Although Tony Bill sounds like a great guy - the commentary is not very probing and a bit vapid, but it may be the production itself had few exciting anecdotes. He is very positive about the crew, writing, performances and I appreciate his support for editing and his philosophy of not interfering in that process as well as describing the evolution of his work in film and Untamed Heart. There is also a theatrical trailer and the package has a reversible alternate cover (see below.)

Untamed Heart tugs the heart-strings and credit to Tomei and Slater who stand-out early in their careers. It's a simple narrative but brought to life well, by Tony Bill, with the modest budget and simple characterizations that hint of a warming depth. The
Blu-ray transfer is 1080P and a solid replication of the original film experience. I didn't find the commentary had substantial value but others may disagree. Anyway, this is such a sweet, touching, human film - a purchase is encouraged on that basis alone. See this if you have not already.
