Widely acknowledged as a true cult classic of modern American cinema, Heathers has captured the imaginations of troubled teenagers the world over with its acerbic satire of the sugar-coated high school movies of the 1980s...

At Westerburg High School, an elite clique of snobby girls known as Heathers reign supreme. Smart and popular, Veronica (Winona Ryder, Stranger Things) is a reluctant member of the gang and disapproves of the other girls' cruel behaviour. When Veronica and her mysterious new boyfriend, J.D. (Christian Slater, True Romance), play a trick on the clique leader, Heather Chandler (Kim Walker), and accidentally poison her, they make it appear a suicide. But it soon becomes clear to Veronica that J.D. is sociopath intent on vengefully killing the school s popular students. She races to stop J.D., clashing with the clique's new leader, Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty), and leading to an explosive final confrontation with her troubled former lover.

Directed by Michael Lehmann, Heathers pushed the teen comedy into dark and nightmarish territory and is distinguished by the career defining central performances of its stars Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. The film is presented here in an exclusive 30th Anniversary 4K restoration with a wealth of extra material, providing unprecedented insight into the making of this hilarious and shocking film.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Wow, the image quality here is impressive. Arrow Video have put Heathers on a dual-layered Blu-ray with a maxed out bitrate. The 1.85:1 1080p image looks pretty flawless. There is hardly a scratch to be seen. Grain is evident but not overwhelming and the detail levels are very strong. Colors are vibrant, looking very true to how the original film must have looked in theatres. Contrast levels are strong too, this is just another case of Arrow knocking it out of the park with their Blu-ray transfer.

Arrow Video give us a few options in the audio department. The film is available in Mono, Stereo or a 5.1 mix. The mono and stereo tracks are both presented in 24-bit linear PCM. The 5.1 mix is presented in DTS-HD Master audio. The separation in the 5.1 mix is decent, and if you have the surround sound set-up, you might be inclined to choose this track. Purists may prefer the film's original mono or stereo track, which is also very robust. Dialogue is clear and audible, and the music of composer David Newman (Fire Birds, The Robe) sounds great, as does the opening 'Que Sera, Sera'. There are optional English subtitles on this Region 'B'
Blu-ray.

As per usual, Arrow Video have loaded this
Blu-ray with valuable extras. First off is an audio commentary by director Michael Lehmann, producer Denise Di Novi and writer Daniel Waters. The three have a good rapport and this is a valuable track for fans. Next up is the 15-minute "Lehmann's Terms" which is a new interview with director Lehmann. "Pizzicato Croquet" is an 11-minute interview with composer David Newman and director Michael Lehmann where they discuss the music of Heathers. "How Very: The Art and Design of Heathers" has production designer Jon Hutman, art director Kara Lindstrom and director Michael Lehmann spending 15-minutes discussing the look of Heathers. "Casting Westerburg High" is a really neat 11-minute interview with casting director Julie Selzer discussing the casting process for Heathers. "Poor Little Heather" is a 17-minute interview with actress Lisanne Falk. "Scott and Larry and Dan and Heathers" is a 38-minute talk with screenwriting team Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood, The People vs Larry Flint), and Heathers screenwriter Daniel Waters. "The Big Bowie Theory" is a newly filmed 35-minute appreciation of Heathers by the writer, actor and comedian John Ross Bowie (The Big Bang Theory). "Return to Westerburg High" is a 21-minute archival featurette providing further insight into the film’s production. "The Beaver Gets a Boner" is a really cool extra to have in this Blu-ray set. This is director Michael Lehmann’s long sought after student film from 1985 made at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. It is really wild. Also here are the Lethal Attraction (Heathers) trailer and the 30th Anniversary Rerelease trailer as well as an image gallery. There is a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Robert Sammelin. The first pressing of the Blu-ray has a collector's booklet featuring new writing by Bidisha, Anna Bogutskaya and an archival interview with cinematographer Francis Kenny.

Heathers is just as good as I remembered, if not better. Arrow have jammed this
Blu-ray with a ton of extras that are pretty neat, my favorite being the student film from director Lehmann. The transfer is beautiful and I would absolutely recommend this disc to anyone considering it.
