Directed by Jamil Dehlavi
USA 1992

A Western couple (played by Melissa Leo and James Wilby) working in Pakistan visit an unconventional holy shrine to harness its spiritual powers to help them conceive a child. They are lavished with the attentions of the shrine’s leader (an exceptional performance from Zia Mohyeddin – Lawrence of Arabia, Khartoum) and her followers, but their methods and motives are not all that they seem, and the couple’s lives are plunged into darkness.

This ravishing, unsettling film from director Jamil Dehlavi (The Blood of Hussain, Born of Fire) is a deeply personal work which raises questions of cultural and sexual identity, religious fanaticism and the abuses of power. The brand-new 2K restoration from the original negative was supervised and approved by Dehlavi and cinematographer Nic Knowland.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Indicator bring the Blu-ray world premiere of Jamil Dehlavi's 1992 film, "Immaculate Conception" to a dual-layered disc with a strong maxed out bitrate. This is an all new 2K restoration by Powerhouse Films from the original negative, supervised and approved by director Jamil Dehlavi and cinematographer Nic Knowland. The image has solid detail and pleasing, film-like, grain, more noticeable in the exterior daylight shots. Contrast is well layered in the high resolution revealing information in the darker parts of the frame. It is more outstanding restoration work from the folks at Indicator.

The audio transfer consist of two options, the first being the original 2.0 stereo in 24-bit linear PCM. We are also given the choice of watching the film with an alternative original mono mix - also LPCM. I would recommend the stereo option here, but both sound competent - even and clear. There is a score by
Richard Harvey (The House of the Long Shadows, Lady Chatterley)  There are optional English SDH subtitles on this Region Free Blu-ray.

Indicator include four interviews as supplements. "Saints and Sinners" is a 6-minute interview with writer, producer, director Jamil Dehlavi. "A Dangerous Picture" is a 20-minute talk with actor James Wilby recalling the difficulty and luck involved with the production of the film. "Leap of Faith" is a 21-minute interview with actor Ronny Jhutti remembering the experience of working on his feature-film debut. "Exotic Warmth" is a 17-minute extra with Nic Knowland reflecting on the challenges of making the film on location. Also included here is the film's original trailer and an exclusive 28-page booklet with a new essay by Naman Ramachandran, Jeff Billington on Nic Knowland, Jamil Dehlavi on Immaculate Conception, an overview of contemporary critical responses, and film credits.

Immaculate Conception is a difficult film to see since its production and a great choice to some to
Blu-ray from Indicator. It once again highlights the impressive work of director Jamil Dehlavi, and fans of Dehlavi should definitely check this out. Indicator have a great 2k restoration here, with some very informative extras.
