ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Suprisingly, I was most keen on the Universal Blu-ray of End of Watch - an intense documentary-style cop-drama which focuses on the friendship of two partners. It was wonderful to see Keisuke Kinoshita's Ballad of Narayama via Criterion Blu-ray. There are many beautiful shots in the filmwith fabulous colors supported well by the 1080P. Blake Edward's Experiment in Terror is a gripping Neo-Noir thriller that has arrived on Blu-ray from Twilight Time. Cujo holds some nostalgic value as a simple and unique edge-of-seat horror. I liked John Wayne in King of the Pecos - a 'B' western revenge flic. The other hour-long entries from Olive Films aren't bad either; The New Frontier and Frontier Horizon are formulaic but still a fun way to start a western double-feature night with something like The Cowboys. Where I usually like these clunky sex-farce comedies from the 70's, I wasn't too keen on The Sex Thief - kinda weak, goofy and disjointed. On DVD Eric covered the strong Iranian drama The White Meadows and the opposite end of the spectrum with the sci-fi comedy Dr. Alien with Judy Landers and Ginger Lynn (eyebrows raised!). Have a super week!!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The New Frontier BD - John Dawson (John Wayne) becomes sheriff of a lawless town and goes up against a nasty saloon owner, Ace Holmes (Warner Richmond) who's been terrorizing the citizens of the new frontier town. Ace and his gang of outlaws are too much for one man, so Dawson deputizes a gang of friendlier outlaws lead by Kit (Al Bridge) and together they try to clean up the town. This was Wayne's second western under the new Republic Pictures banner. Muriel Evans co-stars as Wayne's Love interest. Written by Robert Emmett Tansey (Westward Ho) and directed by Carl Pierson (She Devil). Blu-ray Release date: January 22nd, 2013

Frontier Horizon BD - The Three Mesquiteers was the umbrella title for a series of fifty-one B-westerns released between 1936 and 1943. The films featured the characters Stony Brooke, Tucson Smith and Lullaby Joslin as the threesome, played by many B-western stars of that era. In 1938, John Wayne took over for Robert Livingston as Stony Brooke and starred in eight Mesquiteers films between 1938 and 1939, he was joined by Ray Corrigan as Tucson Smith and Max Terhune as Lullaby Joslin for the first six and Raymond Hatton as Rusty Joslin for the last two. All eight films were directed by George Sherman (Big Jake). In Frontier Horizon aka New Frontier (the final Wayne Mesquiteers film) - planning to build a reservoir on the site, the state government has condemned the town of New Hope and surrounding ranches. The state intends to compensate the landowners fairly, but a crooked real-estate promoter has different plans. The landowners lead by our three heroes ride into action, fighting back against the state and the crooks. Featuring Jennifer Jones (Duel in the Sun) in her screen debut, billed under her real name of Phyllis Isley. Blu-ray Release date: January 22nd, 2013

End of Watch BD - From the writer of Training Day comes a gripping, action-packed cop drama starring Academy Awardr nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena. In their mission to abide by their oath to serve and protect, Officers Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Pena) have formed a powerful brotherhood to ensure they both go home at the end of watch. But nothing can prepare them for the violent backlash that happens after they pull over the members of a notorious drug cartel for a routine traffic stop. Seen from the point of view of the officers, gang members, surveillance cameras, dash cams and citizens caught in the line of fire, a 360 perspective creates a gritty, compassionate and intense portrait of the city's darkest streets, and the brave men and women patrolling them. Blu-ray Release date: January 22nd, 2013

Cujo BD - Based on the Stephen King's terrifying novel - A lovable St. Bernard becomes rabid and terrorizes a small community. In rural Maine, married couple (Dee Wallace, Daniel Hugh-Kelly) struggle to repair their crumbling marriage, while their young son (Danny Pintauro) befriends the hulking, but lovable St. Bernard owned by the town's mechanic (Ed Lauter). With her husband out of town, she and her son take their decrepit car for repairs at the mechanic's remote farmhouse. As the aging Pinto sputters, stops and dies, Cujo appears. The once docile dog has undergone a hideous transformation - and has become a demonic, impeccable killer possessed of an almost supernatural strength and unholy cunning. Lewis Teague (Cat's Eye) directed this critically acclaimed spine-chilling tour-de-force. Blu-ray Release date: January 22nd, 2013

The White Meadows - In this dreamlike yet earthbound film, Rahmat the boatman navigates the increasingly brackish waters of a coastal land, collecting the heartaches and tears of its inhabitants. But he remains powerless against their misguided attempts to appease the gods and make the land green again, whether by offering a bride to the sea or forcibly treating the eyes of a painter who sees in different colors. Drawing firsthand on the challenges faced by Iranian artists of today, writer-director Mohammad Rasoulof s deeply atmospheric and poetical film is a gorgeous allegory of intolerance, brutality and mystified routine that resonates far beyond any one state s borders. Release Date: January 8th, 2013

Dr. Alien - No one suspects that the sexy new biology professor is really an alien scientist. When she experiments on the nerdiest freshman on campus, he quickly becomes a hip sex magnet no girl can resist, especially DR. ALIEN herself, who continues to pump her subject for more satisfying results. Not since "Weird Science" has any young man been asked to make such deep sacrifices in the interest of science. Release Date: January 14th, 2013

King of the Pecos BD - Don't mess with the Duke. especially when he's out for revenge! John Wayne, a slick gunfighter and lawyer returns home to avenge the murder of his parents by the local cattle baron (Cy Kendall). He first attempts to do so legally, but his efforts are thwarted and he resorts to taking the law into his own hands. Wayne joins a group of wronged landowners to battle the cattle baron and his gang of vicious henchmen. Fast-paced direction by Joseph Kane (Hoodlum Empire) and superior photography by Jack A. Marta (Cat Ballou) are just two of the highlights of this early great western. Muriel Evans (The New Frontier) once again plays Wayne's love interest. Blu-ray Release date: January 22nd, 2013

The Sex Thief BD - From its opening title sequence, it is apparent that director Martin Campbell intended his first feature, a low-budget sex romp called THE SEX THIEF, to be an homage to the James Bond series. Irresistible to women of every variety, the roguish title character (David Warbeck) channels his inner Connery, muttering witty double entendres, relishing the danger of his secret mission, forever sidetracked by beautiful women. Blu-ray Release date: January 22nd, 2013

Ballad of Narayama BD - This haunting, kabuki-inflected version of a Japanese folk legend is set in a remote mountain village where food is scarce and tradition dictates that citizens who have reached their seventieth year must be carried to the summit of Mount Narayama and left there to die. The sacrificial elder at the center of the tale is Orin (Kinuyo Tanaka), a dignified and dutiful woman who spends her dwindling days securing the happiness of her loyal widowed son with a respectable new wife. Filmed almost entirely on cunningly designed studio sets, in brilliant color and widescreen, The Ballad of Narayama is a stylish and vividly formal work from Japan’s cinematic golden age, directed by the dynamic Keisuke Kinoshita. Blu-ray Release Date: February 5th, 2013

Experiment in Terror BD - Writer/ director Blake Edwards followed up the enormous success of the chic and sophisticated Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) with a decided change-of-pace: Experiment in Terror (1962), a Neo-Noir character-driven thriller featuring non-clichéd, nuanced performances from Lee Remick, Glenn Ford, and Ross Martin as a calculating psychopath. It was the first film Blake produced as well as directed, and his first effort to be filmed in black-and-white. The film boasts one of the most memorable opening scenes of any thriller: Kelly Sherwood (Lee Remick), an attractive single woman living in the suburbs of San Francisco, drives home from her job as a bank teller. After getting out of her Ford Fairlane convertible, she becomes aware of another person waiting for her in the dark of the garage; she hears a heavy asthmatic wheeze in his voice. The man grabs her from behind and, disturbingly, tells her, "I know a good deal about you, almost everything there is to know," and to prove it he recites her measurements.
