(aka 'Invasion of the Triffids" or "Revolt of the Triffids')
directed by Steve Sekely + Freddie Francis (uncredited)
UK 1962
Along the lines of "Fiend
Without a Face" and similar sci-fi films of the 60's "The
Day of the Triffids" is a rather poor attempt at converting the book to
the screen. Still, as a young lad it more than enthralled me. And why not? - a
spectacular meteorite shower produces an unusual side effect on all who witness
it - they go blind!. So most humans on earth go sightless overnight with only a
handful to start civilization from crumbling. If this
isn't enough for the plot - experimental triffids (plants) now go on the loose
attacking and killing everything in their path. This is a great plot and but
rather ho-hum performances and unworthy production values. Its the type of story
though, that you may see M. Night Shyamalan do one day. Lot's of sci-fi pulp
appeal in this one.

Although I
recommend the film to genre buffs, I can't do the same for this
lackluster DVD. I've been told there is a "Second Sight" PAL DVD of the
same film with much superior image quality. Perhaps we will compare one
day. Overall this is weak - bad analog image -hazy, faded, no extras
save a trailer. On a bright note the subtitles are well done. Overall I
hope to see the "Second Sight" disc soon.
