NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were obtained directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Twilight Time - Region FREE Blu-ray - May 2019: Briefly, the Twilight Time has more muted colors (showing a bit of green infusion), is darker, has a much higher bitrate and show more information in the frame. It appears to be from a different source than the European Blu-rays. The image is equally as flat but the extraneous detail on the side edges - notably the left edge, is significant. Colors looked dull but this may be a function of the original appearance. I can only say on my system - it looks strong. The audio is offered in either a 16-bit DTS-HD 2.0 Master mono audio track or a 5.1 surround as the film was shown theatrically via a 4-Track stereo (Westrex Recording System). There are plenty of, separated, aggressive western genre effects and and excellent score by Leigh Harline (The Farmer's Daughter, No Down Payment, Pickup on South Street, 23 Paces to Baker Street, House of Bamboo, Broken Lance) that supports the film tension. It is available as an isolated option. There are optional English (SDH) subtitles (see sample below) on this Region FREE Blu-ray. The extras consist of the aforementioned isolated score, a short Fox Movietone Newsreel, a theatrical trailer and liner notes by Julie Kirgo.
GREAT western by Edward Dmytryk - a
favorite. Henry Fonda, Richard Widmark, Anthony Quinn ?
Sold. It's always nice to have options - I lean strongly
to the Twilight Time despite the passivity of the image.
A must-see western, imo.

Unfortunately, while the audio is lossless (and an optional German DUB) it is not original 4-track stereo. Sync might be a bit off - but it wasn't distracting. There are optional German subtitles on the Region 'B' Blu-ray.
It's bare-bones - only some
trailers as extras - but is BD-Live (whatever that
constitutes for this edition). I still love
this western and this is the best version for home
theatre consumption.
***
Warlock may looks better than SD-DVD - but its isn't enough of an improvement to get excited about. The image remains muddy and colors continue to bleed. This doesn't look very good - or, hopefully, not as clean and crisp as it can. It's a fab western so lets hope that is resolved one day. Audio goes lossless with the original and the French DUB but the subtitle foible remains. Patrick Brion and Tavernier talking about the film - in French - as the extras. No - again, I suggest patience - and wait for a superior 1080P transfer without the forced subtitle faux-pas.
***
ON THE DVDs: We can duplicate some of our comments from "Forty Guns" in this comparison. The Optimum is slightly sharper and has minutely better color balance than the Fox. Both have a small degree of edge enhancement. The image differences are pretty negligible though. The Fox has well-appointed optional subtitles and the Optimum has none. The Fox has a trailer for the film and six other westerns and a short 'Movie-Tone news reel', where the Optimum has nothing. I don't see any significant cropping issues and as both are so cheap I'm glad I own the Optimum for image and Fox for the trailers + bumped stereo audio if I'm in the mood for that.
Gary W Tooze RE:
the Optimum: Except for some occasional edge enhancements (see frame
#3), this is a great transfer. |
