directed by Edward Dmytryk
USA 1954

The one and only Spencer Tracy stars in Broken Lance (1954) as a fierce rancher who has raised his sons (played by Richard Widmark, Robert Wagner, Earl Holliman, and Hugh O’Brian) with a potent work ethic but little paternal affection. Before long, the brothers are at each other’s throats, with dramatic results for the whole family. Also starring Katy Jurado, Oscar®-nominated for her performance as Tracy’s outcast wife, and Jean Peters as the young woman who catches Wagner’s eye.

***

A Western remake of ”House of Strangers” (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1949), there is also a touch of King Lear in the story, in form of the brothers and their relationship to their father. But its only a touch, and King Lear would not be adapted into Western before “The Man from Laramie” (Anthony Mann, 1955). It nevertheless is interesting with what ease themes from King Lear can be carried over into the Western.

Joe Devereaux (Robert Wagner) has just spend four years in jail and now discovers, that not only is his father (Spencer Tracy) dead, but his brothers have taken over the ranch and sold it off to an oil company. Refusing to become part of the enterprise, he revisits the ranch, thereby the past, and eventually comes face to face with the elder brother, Ben Devereaux (Richard Widmark).

By itself a classic Western, noting upon the birth of the west, where men took law into their own hands, and how that part of the west died away, with the introduction of towns, and as such laws and banks. Tracy is superb as the self-made rancher, who is betrayed by his oldest son.

Comments

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Twilight Time - Region FREE - Blu-ray November 15': The new Twilight Time 1080P has a significant color shift from the previous 2 DVDs. I can't speak to the film's original appearance but this new BD is very dark and blue-leaning - and the SDs look quite green beside it. I suspect the HD is accurate as it has a high bitrate and I never suspect Twilight Time of manipulation. It looks quite impressive in-motion and I like the depth of some of the colors - they can really look bold and prominent. It also shows way more information - on the sides. The 2.55:1 visuals are quite thick - which may also be a more film-like representation. I have always loved this western and I appreciated seeing it looking so strong.

Twilight Time give the option of robust DTS-HD Master tracks - one in 5.0 (there was a 4-Track Stereo theatrical version) with a few surprise separations and a 2.0 channel - both exporting good depth via the healthy kbps. Great to have the option. The score by Leigh Harline (Pickup on South Street, 23 Paces to Baker Street, House of Bamboo, Johnny Come Lately) seems to benefit occasionally quite majestic and mysterious.  There are optional English subtitles and my Oppo has identified it as being a region FREE.

Supplements include some value over the DVDs with an audio commentary with actor Earl Holliman and film historian Nick Redman discussing his memories of the production and stars. There is a short Fox Movietone Newsreel, two trailers and the always present Isolated Score Track. The package has an 8-page liner notes by Julie Kirgo and is limited to 3,000 units.

A classic and impressive western - fans of the strong cast and the genre should definitely indulge. They don't make them like this anymore. It's a great film, IMO - and one you will want to see in the improved higher resolution and supportive audio (not crazy about the cover, though). Extras add further value. Kind of a 'no-brainier' purchase as far as I am concerned for any, even remotely, keen.

ON THE DVDs: Same deal as "Forty Guns", "Drums Along the Mohawk" and "Warlock" as in this comparison. The Optimum is slightly sharper although differences may be more pronounced than in the aforementioned DVD analysis'. Both show some unusual green cast. The Fox has well-appointed optional subtitles and the Optimum has none. The Fox has a trailer for the film and the Fox Movie-Tone News reel, where the Optimum has nothing. The Fox offers Stereo 4.0audio where the Optimum is only monaural. I don't see any significant cropping issues and as both are very reasonably priced. This may be one instance where you want to nab the Optimum if you don't have it already.

RE: Optimum - This is an amazing looking DVD, even if its an DVD-5. While the source is grainy, and there are slight halos, details are surprisingly sharp and colors look great. And then anamorphic to add. Impressive, even with its flaws.

The film is presented in its Cinemascope OAR of 2.55:1.

Sound is mono, dialogue is clear, the score is surprisingly dynamic and there is no noise.
