Broken Lance, Forty Guns, The Proud Ones and The Culpepper Cattle Co.

Synopses:

Broken Lance
Cattle baron Matt Devereaux (Spencer Tracy) raids a copper smelter that is polluting his water, then divides his property among his sons. Son Joe takes responsibility for the raid and gets three years in prison. Matt dies from a stroke partly caused by his rebellious sons and when Joe gets out he plans revenge.

Forty Guns
An authoritarian rancher (played by Barbara Stanwyck) rules an Arizona county with her private posse of hired guns. When a new Marshall arrives to set things straight, the cattle queen finds herself falling, brutally for the avowedly non-violent lawman. Both have itchy-fingered brothers, a female gunman enters the picture, and things go desperately wrong.

The Proud Ones
Marshal Silver (Robert Ryan) is run out of town under suspicion of being a trigger-happy killer after shooting a hired gun of Honest John Barrett. A placid life in a new town is interrupted by the reappearance of Barrett, old enemies and the son of the hired gun from years ago, Anderson.

The Culpepper Cattle Co.
Young farmboy who always wanted to be a cowhand talks a tough trail boss into hiring him on a cattle drive.

Comments:

Four power-packed representatives of the western genre - three 2.35 aspect ratio cinemascope classics of the 50's and one very deserved, more modern, entry from the 70's (in 1.85). Fox continues with their strong pragmatic releases - devoid of substantial extras but priced for purchase. In this package you are getting them at almost a 50% discount from buying individually. Both Broken Lance and Forty Guns came out last year and the new entries are The Proud Ones and The Culpepper Cattle Co. For the most part, the image quality is exceptionally strong. All 4 are anamorphic, progressive transfers with optional English subtitles and clear original audio. At around $25, and their own keep cases, this is a fabulous deal - and we certainly recommend.

As far as the films go, I loved them all. I have a special place for Forty Guns as it is a favorite film, but viewing the rest was an absolute pleasure as well. My biggest surprise was The Culpepper Cattle Co. which has gestures of other modern westerns (from Peckinpah to Eastwood). It seems like the black-sheep of the collection with the first 3 films being made in the 50's and Culpepper in the 70's, but it was a better film than it has been critically painted.
