Directed by Martin Ritt
USA 1957

An all-star cast – including Joanne Woodward, Sheree North, Tony Randall, Jeffrey Hunter, Cameron Mitchell, Barbara Rush, and Pat Hingle – highlights No Down Payment (1957), a Martin Ritt-directed “problem film” about the denizens of a California subdivision, struggling to make ends meet even as they deal with racism, alcoholism, and promiscuity. Appropriately, given the film’s uneasy themes, the screenplay was written by blacklisted Ben Maddow, fronted by Philip Yordan.

No Down Payment is a 1957 film drama directed by Martin Ritt. It was scripted by Philip Yordan, who fronted for a then uncredited and blacklisted Ben Maddow, and is based on the novel of the same name by John McPartland. Featured is an all star cast, including Joanne Woodward, Sheree North, Tony Randall, Jeffrey Hunter, Cameron Mitchell, and Pat Hingle.

Set in a California subdivision, the story follows four couples who have bought homes and are neighbors. Among the problems facing the couples are alcoholism, racism, and promiscuity.

The story revolves around the idea of "no down payment" and the over-extended nature of families' economic situation. Tony Randall is in an unsympathetic role, a car salesman looking for a good time. Other issues include discrimination against a former war hero for lack of education.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

The Twilight Time 1080P is very strong. This was a Twentieth Century Fox and the source is in pristine condition - fabulous contrast and inky black levels and it has some impressive sharpness. The Blu-ray visuals are exceptionally strong in-motion. A stunning image on a dual-layered disc with a very high bitrate. I was extremely pleased with the HD image.

No Down Payment had a 4-Track Stereo (Westrex Recording System) theatrically and Twilight Time give the option of a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround transfer at a powerful 2657 kbps (24-bit) or a similar encode in 2.0 channel stereo. I did notice some separation although the film doesn't require much of it - easily handling the
beautiful score by Leigh Harline (Pickup on South Street, 23 Paces to Baker Street, House of Bamboo, Broken Lance) also offered as an isolated option. There are optional English subtitles on the region FREE Blu-ray disc.

No extras aside from the isolated score option and some liner notes by Julie Kirgo. Shame there are no further supplements or a commentary.

GREAT film! - I had only seen it once many years ago and this HD presentation is brilliant. I was so impressed by the performances and this is a multi-layered story of intertwining characters and real life crises.  The HD presentation is so impressive that I am actually excited about my next viewing. This
Blu-ray, and especially the film, are both strongly recommended!
