Something of a late-career companion to 8½, Federico Fellini’s penultimate film is a similarly self-reflexive (and self-deprecating) journey through both the director’s dream life and his cinematic world—which are, here as always in Fellini’s work, inextricably entwined. In Rome to make a documentary about the great filmmaker, a Japanese camera crew follows Fellini on a tour through his longtime home studio of Cinecittà as the maestro’s memories and fantasies unfurl in a dizzying, dazzling, time-bending love letter to the art and spectacle of moviemaking. The film’s sprawling vision even makes room for an appearance by Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg who, in an unforgettable bit of movie magic, relive their iconic Trevi Fountain scene from La dolce vita, lent new poignancy by the tacit acknowledgement of time’s passing. ***
Federico Fellini's "Intervista" (Interview) can be described as an
impromptu fiction, a mock documentary or simply a divertissement. There are some
who have suggested that it's just something Fellini turned out when he had
nothing better to do, as if the cinema master had become a Sunday painter. Excerpt from NYTimes located HERE |

ADDITION: Criterion

(November 2020): Criterion have transferred Federico Fellini's
Intervista

package of Essential
Fellini that includes
Toby Dammit 1968,
Variety Lights
1950,
The White Sheik 1952,
I vitelloni 1953,
La strada 1954,
Il bidone 1955,
Nights of Cabiria 1957,
La dolce vita
1960,
8½ 1963,
Juliet of the Spirits 1965, Fellini

And the Ship
Sails On 1983 and
Intervista 1987. This is the 1st
Blu-ray
in the Essential
Fellini package. The
1.37:1 image looks quite strong - bright colors, decent contrast and some
depth.
"Restoration of Intervista (Federico Fellini, 1987) completed in
2019 by Istituto Luce - Cinecitta and Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia
- Cineteca Nazionale at the Istituto Luce - Cinecitt',1 laboratories from
the original 35mm picture negative made available by Istituto Luce -
Cinecitta, Rai Cinema, the heirs of Ibrahim Moussa and from a positive track
printed from the optical soundtrack negative. Sound restoration supervision
by Federico Savina."
NOTE: We have added 40 more large
resolution Blu-ray captures
(in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE
On their
Blu-ray,
Criterion use a linear PCM mono track (24-bit) in the
original Italian language. I always thought there was an English
language DUB version on Intervista, if so, it is not here. There
are no effects but a pleasant score by
Nicola Piovani (The
Perfume of the Lady in Black,
Night
of the Shooting Stars,
Footprints) - also used are
Nino Rota's music from
I Clowns,
Il bidone,
La dolce vita,
Ginger E Fred
etc.. Criterion offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Criterion
Blu-ray
NOTE: The deluxe packaging, includes two lavishly illustrated books with hundreds of pages of content: notes on the films by scholar David Forgacs, essays by filmmakers Michael Almereyda, Kogonada, and Carol Morley; film critics Bilge Ebiri and Stephanie Zacharek; and novelist Colm Tóibín, and dozens of images spotlighting Don Young’s renowned collection of Fellini memorabilia collector’s set designed by Raphael Geroni, with new illustrations by Abigail Giuseppe. Federico Fellini's Intervista is more of the director's nostalgia, philosophy of memory and film-within-a-film magic. Eventually, we realize that there is no difference between the genuine 'reality' and what is scripted or 'off the cuff' playful fun. This is highly interesting later-Fellini and has great supplements - part of Criterion's Essential Fellini Blu-ray package.... that we strongly recommend. |
