Directed by William A. Wellman
USA 1942

From William A. Wellman, the legendary director of Wings, Beau Geste The Public Enemy, Nothing Sacred, The Ox-Bow Incident, Yellow Sky and The High and the Mighty, comes this romantic western-drama starring screen icons Barbara Stanwyck (All I Desire) and Joel McCrea (The Virginian). After Hoyt City dedicates a statue to its founder Ethan Hoyt (McCrea), the woman who inspired his achievement, the 109-year-old Hannah Sempler (Stanwyck), tells their story to a young biographer. She begins with their elopement in 1848 when she was a headstrong Philadelphia girl of 16 and Ethan was an idealist yearning to build a city in the West. Their future was fraught with difficulties, from life in a prairie shack to a fruitless search for gold and, ultimately, to Ethan’s jealousy over Hannah’s friendship with gambler Steely Edwards (Brian Donlevy, Canyon Passage). Through it all, she remained what she is today: the woman who sacrificed everything for her husband’s sake. Filled with action and humor, this moving film was vigorously directed by Wellman and beautifully shot by the great William C. Mellor (A Place in the Sun).

***

In Hoyt City, a statue of founder Ethan Hoyt is dedicated, and 100 year old Hannah Sempler Hoyt (who lives in the last residence among skyscrapers) is at last persuaded to tell her story to a 'girl biographer'. Flashback: in 1848, teenage Hannah meets and flirts with pioneer Ethan; on a sudden impulse, they elope. We follow their struggle to found a city in the wilderness, hampered by the Gold Rush, star-crossed love, peril, and heartbreak. The star "ages" 80 years.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (May 2020): Kino have transferred the 1942 William A. Wellman film The Great Man's Lady to Blu-ray as part of their Barbara Stanwyck Blu-ray Collection with Internes Can't Take Money, The Great Man's Lady and The Bride Wore Boots. The film is on a single-layered disc with a supportive bitrate. The defining visual feature is the lush grain. There are light surface scratches, well layered contrast and deep black levels. It looks pretty darn sweet and film-like to me.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. It is clear with modest effects and a score by Victor Young (Rio Grande, I Walk Alone, Strategic Air CommandThe Sun Shines BrightThe Accused, Johnny GuitarChina Gate etc.) resonating well into the film's serious moods. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by film historian Dr. Eloise Ross (author of the The Pre-Code Companion.) She again adds some interesting fodder to mull over about the production, Stanwyck and much more. It was relaxed and I enjoyed it. There are trailers including an SD one for The Great Man's Lady.

The Great Man's Lady is an excellent effort - part historical biography, romance and western genre film. It was a fabulous vehicle for Stanwyck again who just shines - her eyes telling more than the dialogue. The Kino Blu-ray looks strong and the commentary is certainly worth a boo. Another appreciated addition to the Barbara Stanwyck Blu-ray Collection  - I love the first two films in this set, so far. The screwball-ish comedy The Bride Wore Boots is next!
