An early Sirk melodrama that is saved by Stanwyck's full-blooded performance. She's a failed actress invited back to the small town she left ten years earlier after a scandalous affair. Her daughter is acting in a play and wants her mother to see her in the high school production, but the townsfolk have long memories and are prepared to punish Stanwyck for her past behavior.

The film is all Stanwyck but she doesn't have enough plot to pull off anything spectacular and can only suffice to make it believable. It hard to determine if Sirk's soap-opera is giving digs at small-town prejudices - most likely it is. Transfer is again a shade above acceptable if not quite reaching spectacular heights. It's bare bones, no visible manipulations, great removable subtitles and very competent. Film grain is again pleasantly visible. Probably a 50/50 to buy individually (you can't anyway), but makes a perfect addition to the boxset. For those keen on Stanwyck and/or Sirk this is just further enticement to snap up this fabulous boxset. |
