Directed by Douglas Sirk
USA 1953
From Douglas Sirk, the legendary director of Magnificent Obsession, There’s Always Tomorrow, All That Heaven Allows, Written on the Wind, The Tarnished Angels and Imitation of Life, comes this classic melodrama starring screen legend Barbara Stanwyck (The Lady Eve, Internes Can’t Take Money) as a stage actress who returns to the small town and family she once abandoned. Ten years ago, a turn-of-the-century scandal forced Naomi Murdoch (Stanwyck) to desert her husband (Richard Carlson, The Magnetic Monster) and their children for a stage career. Now, returning to their small Wisconsin town to see her daughter in a play, she has hopes of reconciliation. Her husband, a high school principal, is involved with one of his teachers (Maureen O’Sullivan, Tarzan the Ape Man) and her children have mixed feelings about her. After an unexpected turn of events leads to another scandal, Naomi’s hopes of starting over are suddenly in jeopardy. The wonderful cast includes Lyle Bettger (No Man of Her Own), Marcia Henderson (Naked Alibi) and Richard Long (TV’s The Big Valley). *** An early Sirk melodrama that is saved by Stanwyck's full-blooded performance. She's a failed actress invited back to the small town she left ten years earlier after a scandalous affair. Her daughter is acting in a play and wants her mother to see her in the high school production, but the townsfolk have long memories and are prepared to punish Stanwyck for her past behavior. |

On their
Blu-ray,
Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (16-bit) in the original
English language. It is another advancement in the film's audio and
score by David M. Lieberman (his only film credit) for the 'All I
Desire' theme and, uncredited stock music by
Henry Mancini (Days
of Wine and Roses Oklahoma
Crude,
Wait
Until Dark,
Operation Petticoat, Mr.
Hobbs Takes a Vacation, Experiment
in Terror, Charade)
and
Herman Stein (Six
Bridges to Cross,
Son
of Ali Baba, Man
in the Shadow,
Female
on the Beach,
This
Island Earth,
It Came From Outer Space,
War Arrow,
Tarantula,
There's Always Tomorrow,
The Incredible Shrinking Man.) Some may note Franz Schubert's
Unfinished Symphony ("Symphony #8") instrumental version
heard during poetry reading.
It all sounds excellent via the lossless with crisp, clean dialogue. Kino offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Kino
Blu-ray
has a new audio commentary by film historian Imogen Sara Smith who
discusses a lot of Barbara Stanwyck - her professionalism, husky low
voice, strong
performance in All I Desire and personal life mirroring the film
to some degree. She also talks about Sirk's impressive skills as a
filmmaker, the camerawork, Rosemary Odell costuming, the supporting players, the narrative with
small town pettiness, the Carol Ryrie Brink novel - its adaptations and
much more. She is a favorite and this is at her usual high standard.
Well worth the indulgence. There is also a trailer for All I Desire.
Douglas Sirk's All I Desire
is a less-discussed film by the director and carries many layers to it.
Stanwyck is at her best and it's a marvelous portrait. It's themes of an
underlying dysfunctional family and negatively slanted caricature of
small town USA are both brilliantly realized. The gorgeous Kino Blu-ray
a/v presentation and excellent commentary analysis by Imogen Sara Smith
give this our highest recommendation! Get this.
