Murder suspect Al Willis (Gene Barry, The War of the Worlds), released for lack of evidence, vows vengeance on the cops who brutalized him. When one of those cops turns up dead, his partner Chief Joe Conroy (Sterling Hayden, The Asphalt Jungle) hunts down Al who has skipped town for a border city. Both men end up in thrall to bad girl Marianna (Gloria Grahame, In a Lonely Place), whose unique sexiness is on full display in this film noir potboiler. Written by Lawrence Roman (A Kiss Before Dying) and directed by Jerry Hopper (Secret of the Incas). The strong supporting cast includes Marcia Henderson (Thunder Bay), Max Showalter (Niagara), Billy Chapin (The Night of the Hunter) and Chuck Connors (The Big Country). *** Ross Hunter hadn't yet completely graduated to glossy, star-studded soap operas when he produced the taut crime meller Naked Alibi. Chief of detectives Joseph E. Conroy (Sterling Hayden) is busted after failing to prove that "solid citizen" Al Willis (Gene Barry) is a maniacal cop-killer. Despite his lack of authority, Conroy puts so much heat on Willis that the latter skips town with his floozy lady friend Marianna (Gloria Grahame). Conroy follows the two fugitives to a wide-open border town, then slowly and methodically maps out the villain's doom. Essentially a cat-and-mouse game for most of its running time, Naked Alibi slowly but surely builds up to a nailbiting rooftop-chase climax. Excerpt from B+N located HERE |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
On their
Blu-ray,
Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel mono track (16-bit) in the original
English language. It sounds consistent with audible dialogue and a score
credited to Hans J. Salter (Pittsburgh, Man
Without a Star,
The
Killer that Stalked New York, The
Strange Door,
Cover
Up, Man
Without a Star,
Scarlet Street,
The Land Unknown,
The War Lord,
The Mole People,
The Strange Case of Doctor Rx)
and
Frank Skinner (The
Appaloosa, Madame
X,
Magnificent
Obsession,
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein,
All That Heaven Allows,
Thunder Bay, and
The Naked City) adding
some noir-ish atmosphere - especially in Tijuana. The DUB'ed song by
Grahame is worth the price of the disc alone! Kino offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Kino
Blu-ray has
another excellent commentary from Kat Ellinger. She discusses the
director Jerry Hopper, the stars - notable with
Gloria Grahame's
obsession with her own lip(s), plastic surgery and mentioned that in the
recent film, Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, as they used this
film's bar scene in that film.
Grahame's flirting with Hayden on-set -
his fear of her etc. She talks about the studio system, auteur-directors,
domestic violence in the story,
and much more - it is at her usual high level - interesting and
educational. There is also a trailer for Naked Alibi and other
Noir trailers. There is a reversible cover (see below).
Like many fans - this is a title we have
waited for and I am so happy with the final Blu-ray
product. A fabulous Noir -
Grahame is at her most hypnotic, and
the wonderful a/v HD presentation and the Kat commentary. It has our
highest recommendation! |
