(aka "You Can't Take Money" or "Student Doctors Can't Take Money")

Directed by Alfred Santell
USA 1937

Young Dr. James Kildare (Joel McCrea, Four Faces West), interning at a clinic, falls for his patient Janet Haley (Barbara Stanwyck, Witness to Murder). The feeling is mutual, but Janet has a secret she will not divulge: She’s the widow of a bank robber who hid their daughter before he died and she is desperately trying to find the little girl. She will use anyone—including Dr. Kildare—to get her child back. The doctor’s association with gangster Hanlon (Lloyd Nolan, The House on 92nd Street), whose injuries Kildare secretly patched up, and Janet’s connection with gangster Innes (Stanley Ridges, Black Friday), who’s helping her find her daughter, bring it all to a rousing head filled with action, suspense and the unexpected! Stylishly directed by Alfred Santell (Breakfast for Two), Internes Can’t Take Money was the third of six films co-starring Stanwyck and McCrea and the only Dr. Kildare film produced by Paramount. The Max Brand-created character was picked up by MGM for a series of successful movies from 1938 to 1942 starring Lew Ayres as Kildare.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (May 2020): Kino have transferred the 1937 melodrama Internes Can't Take Money to Blu-ray as part of their Barbara Stanwyck Blu-ray Collection with Internes Can't Take Money,  The Great Man's Lady and The Bride Wore Boots. The film is relatively short at 1-hour 20-minutes and a single-layered disc suffices housing it in 1080P with a high bitrate. The defining visual feature is the lush grain. There are light surface scratches but I thought the image was beautiful with rich texture.

NOTE: We have added 56 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. It is at the mercy of the production's age but everything is clear enough with audible dialogue and a score by Gregory Stone (Easy Living, Jivaro, Girls' School, Her Jungle Love), Friedrich Hollaender (A Foreign Affair, Caught, Berlin Express, Background to Danger, The Verdict) and Bernhard Kaun (The Story of Temple Drake, Dangerous, 1931's Frankenstein) sounding a bit deeper with more consistent dialogue. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by film historian Dr. Eloise Ross (author of the The Pre-Code Companion.) In her Australian accent, she addresses many facets of the film including the set design, Stanwyck, the future Kildare films, some of the 'politically less-correct' facets of the film (a Dr. mocking a female patient's weight, all of the doctors being male etc.). I thought it was pretty good, especially her appreciation of Stanwyck's onscreen power, the 'popcorn' references (selling herself), the decor, fashion, the rain in the background and other attention to detail found in the production. There are trailers but none for Internes Can't Take Money.

I thoroughly enjoyed Internes Can't Take Money ... a lot. It's heavy on the melodrama with rarely a scene including Stanwyck where her eyes aren't filled with tears. It's a beautiful movie and a fabulous screen debut for Dr. Kildare. The Kino Blu-ray looks wonderful and the commentary adds further value. A great start to the Barbara Stanwyck Blu-ray Collection  - stay tuned for more.

P.S. Yes, we now use the term "Interns" (missing the 'e') as the plural of medical students in an 'internship'.
