(aka 'Out of the Night')

Directed by Steven Spielberg
USA 2005

Dockworker Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) struggles to build a positive relationship with his two children, Rachel (Dakota Fanning) and Robbie (Justin Chatwin). When his ex-wife, Mary Ann (Miranda Otto), drops them off at Ferrier's house, it seems as though it will be just another tension-filled weekend. However, when electromagnetic pulses of lightning strike the area, the strange event turns out to be the beginning of an alien invasion, and Ferrier must now protect his children as they seek refuge.

***

Divorced bad dad Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) has his two kids for the weekend when a freak lightning storm hits his blue-collar New Jersey neighbourhood. Next, an apocalypse: the ground cracks and yawns open, the basso-groan of alien-built tripods begins a terrifying industrial symphony, and crackling beams vaporize the fleeing herds one by one, their suddenly body-less clothes borne into the air like kites. (The mass-panicked humans can pose as much a threat as their predators, as when a deranged zombie mob descends on the Ferriers' car.) Like its characters, 'War' is always on the run: no time to explain the alien infrastructure or the crimson kudzu-like vines choking the landscape; when a burning train screams past, we pause to stare wordlessly at its smoking streak, then it's on to the next catastrophe. September 11 signifiers abound – in the thick film of white death-dust veiling Cruise after a narrow escape, and the Red Cross volunteer megaphoning 'We have more blood than we can use' – but any social context or family pathos (yes, Ray rises to the occasion, but so did the dread Giuliani) is thin and wobbly. Nevertheless, the film succeeds as pure sensation, an exacting distillation of fear.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray and 4K UHD captures were taken directly from the discs.

ADDITION: Paramount 4K UHD (May 2020): Paramount transferred Steven Spielberg's 2005 War of the Worlds to 4K UHD. A predominant feature of the image presentation are the CGI effects. The 4K UHD has HDR applied and the resulting image is impressive although in-motion things can appear soft at times (because of the CGI) - the overall look is very thick and film-like (homage-ey?) with a desirable richness and texture to the visuals. The bitrate is almost double the BD but the 2-hour film and 65 Gig disc size feel a tad restrained. The Blu-ray image can be a bit green at times (see plane crash captures), and the 4K seems to have irradiated that. Unlike the DVD and Blu-ray, the 4K UHD is in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio. It does what higher resolution usually does - more layered contrast - more pure whites without blowout (as seen on both other digital editions) deeper blacks - this can produce more detail (see crouching street-goers - coats etc.)

It is likely that the monitor you are seeing this review is not an HDR-compatible display (High Dynamic Range) or Dolby Vision, where each pixel can be assigned with a wider and notably granular range of color and light. Our capture software if simulating the HDR (in a uniform manner) for standard monitors. This should make it easier for us to review more 4K UHD titles in the future and give you a decent idea of its attributes on your system. So our captures may not support the exact same colors (coolness of skin tones, brighter or darker hues etc.) as the 4K system at your home. But the framing, detail, grain texture support etc. are, generally, not effected by this simulation representation.

NOTE: 70 more more full resolution (3840 X 2160) 4K UHD captures for Patrons are available HERE.

We have reviewed the following 4K UHD packages to date: Lucio Fulci's 1979 Zombie  (software uniformly simulated HDR),, 2004's Van Helsing  (software uniformly simulated HDR),  The Shallows (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Bridge on the River Kwai (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Deer Hunter (software uniformly simulated HDR),  The Elephant Man (software uniformly simulated HDR), A Quiet Place (software uniformly simulated HDR), Easy Rider (software uniformly simulated HDR), Suspiria (software uniformly simulated HDR), Pan's Labyrinth (software uniformly simulated HDR) The Wizard of Oz, (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Shining, (software uniformly simulated HDR), Batman Returns (software uniformly simulated HDR), Don't Look Now (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Man Who Killed Killed and then The Bigfoot  (software uniformly simulated HDR), Bram Stoker's Dracula (software uniformly simulated HDR), Lucy (software uniformly simulated HDR), They Live (software uniformly simulated HDR),  Shutter Island (software uniformly simulated HDR),  The Matrix (software uniformly simulated HDR), Alien (software uniformly simulated HDR), Toy Story (software uniformly simulated HDR),  A Few Good Men (software uniformly simulated HDR),  2001: A Space Odyssey (HDR caps udated), Schindler's List (simulated HDR), The Neon Demon (No HDR), Dawn of the Dead (No HDR), Saving Private Ryan (simulated HDR and 'raw' captures), Suspiria (No HDR), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (No HDR), The Big Lebowski, and I Am Legend (simulated and 'raw' HDR captures).

If you are fortunate enough to have a setup that allows for Dolby Atmos or Dolby TrueHD 7.1, Paramount's 4K UHD track has produced a debate about the film's LFE (low-frequency effects.) The BD utilized this quite well - pushing the intense bass of alien tripod births it to your sub-woofer. The 4K UHD - not so much. However, the Atmos expresses a greater sense of envelopment of War of the World's duly impressive soundstage. It sounds completely more immersive. So, the lesson here is that if you are a bass/sub-woofer-junkie be prepared that it may not escalate to your atmospheric anticipation and break your windows... but the overall sound is an improvement by my ears. The occasionally intense score is by John Williams - Dracula (1979), Warhorse, Conrack, The Fury, The Cowboys - is another beneficiary of the robust audio transfer. There are multiple optional foreign language DUBs and subtitle options including English and English (SDH) and as with all 4K UHD discs, this Paramount package is Region 'Free' (Blu-ray too!) playable worldwide.

NOTE: For Atmos many non-compliant systems will recognizes it as TrueHD 7.1, but from Wikipedia: "Because of limited bandwidth and lack of processing power, Atmos in home theaters is not a real-time mix rendered the same way as in cinemas. The substream is added to Dolby TrueHD or Dolby Digital Plus. This substream only represents a losslessly encoded fully object-based mix. This substream does not include all 128 objects separated. This is not a matrix-encoded channel, but a spatially-encoded digital channel. Atmos in home theaters can support 24.1.10 channel, but it is not an object-based real-time rendering. Filmmakers need to remix and render the TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus soundtracks with Dolby Media Producer."

Paramount's 4K UHD disc is bare-bones (no extras) but the second disc Blu-ray includes the same extras (1/2 dozen featurettes etc.) from the old 2-disc DVD and previous Blu-ray.

While not demo for the 4K UHD format, Spielberg's 2005 War of the Worlds has a ton going for it. I seem to repeat this - that I find the director's film have immensely strong first 1/2's but underwhelm (comparatively) in the second half. This is another. Of course, effects-wise, Cruise-Fanning, apocalypse appeal, and the a/v make it a desirable 4K UHD disc to have when you want the ultimate presentation of 2005 War of the Worlds in your home theatre. It's a keeper for me.

ADDITION: Dreamworks - Region FREE  Blu-ray - September 2017: Firstly, I admit to disliking this immensely when I first watched the DVD years ago. But I revisited when I began to see the film as more part of the apocalypse genre and even a creature-feature than a modern remake of the original (BTW, why isn't that on Blu-ray?). Strangely, I've warmed to the film more as a world-ending flic than a hollow, less inventive, effects-laden, disaster-porn, remake. Okay, my myopia is admitted.

In War of the Worlds we see that our own species seem as big of a threat when confronted with a potential cataclysmic event transpire (the reason being of lesser importance) - from the 'mob rules' attitude of stealing cars at gunpoint to the psychotically vengeful Harlan Ogilvy (Tim Robbins) demanding a personal showdown with said threat. He had to be dealt with. To me, the human interaction, is far more relevant than the alien encounter - which end up a curiosity.

The dual-layered 1080P image looks quite strong - maintaining the saturation-infused style and advancing over SD in a few areas - notably the texture, richer colors and the impressive presentation in-motion. Yes, overproduction in the effects (it is a Spielberg movie) but they seem far more real in the higher resolution - perhaps justifying the budget. There are more layer to the contrast and the visuals may be a bit brighter.

What the HD really benefits from is the audio with the film's extensive sound design. A robust DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround at a whopping 4083 kbps (24-bit) is utilized with powerful results - rich, deep bass with earth-breaking damages to the arching, metallic, sound of the alien machines. Very intense with plenty of head-turning separation.

Where the DVD had the 14-minute featurette 'Designing the Enemy', the Blu-ray is stacked with Revisiting the Invasion, The H.G. Wells Legacy, Steven Spielberg and the Original War of the Worlds, Characters: The Family Unit, Previsualization, four Production Diaries and much more with lots of participation from Cruise and Spielberg.

Some see this as the final film of a Spielberg trilogy of alien encounters from the intellectually civilized Close Encounters, the family fun of ET, to the edgier, darker War of the Worlds. I doubt it was planned that way. Look out for Gene Barry, producer of the original, as the grandfather in this one. Nice touch.

Well, 12-year later - it's a very reasonably priced Blu-ray and a heck of an Apocalypse film - with the invasion, simply a catalyst.

***

The modern trend in DVD transfers is a saturated look with piercing blacks and an overall dark appearance. Film has moved to a very 'thick' look which seems fairly easy to put to digital. This anamorphic and progressive DVD looks very good and sounds even better with pleasing sound separation. Lone featurette as an extra. I expect this DVD appearance is very akin to the theatrical showing.
