DVD Review: Network - Region 2 - PAL
Comments |
Another competent and watchable, reasonably-priced, single-layered SD PAL transfer from Network out of the UK. They use a source from Studio Canal. Do You Know This Voice? is a subtle and well realized British thriller with Duryea starring as a bloke on hard times who plots a kidnapping to extort some money. Very Noirish and lots of uncomfortable emotion and interpersonal conflict. The video is quite strong - clean, reasonably tight and good contrast with a hint of gloss. There is plenty of depth. Well above-average, I would say. It's in the original 1.66:1 aspect ratio and is surprising in its pristine nature. The audio is as clean as the image, and the dramatic score is by Carlo Martelli (The Lost Continent, Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow) adding some mysterious atmosphere and anxious tension. The audio is consistent, dialogue audible. There are no subtitles on the region 2 disc. There are no extras at all. The film has definite merit, and is a British crime-thriller with some obvious Noir leanings although perhaps not enough to include it in the cycle. I appreciated Do You Know This Voice?'s odd manner and unusual development. It's something I intend to revisit. Recommended to those keen on the genre and Duryea fans. - Gary Tooze |
