Volume 2 of The Edgar Wallace Mystery series continues with 7 more films produced by Jack Greenwood and Merton Park Studios and an extra film THE WHITE TRAP produced by Julian Wintle and Leslie Parkyn for Independent Artists on 3 dual-layered discs. CLUE OF THE SILVER KEY is the second mystery in the series featuring Bernard Lee as Supt. Meredith and Stanley Morgan as Sgt. Anson. MAN DETAINED is a noirish story of a burglar being blamed on a killing he did not commit. BACKFIRE! features an arson that goes terribly wrong. The StudioCanal logo starts off each film. The films are progressively transferred in theatrical aspect ratio of 1.65:1. The anamorphic transfers looks excellent, with strong contrast and very minimal damage on the prints. Some films suffer from poor soundtrack and this is where the optional English subtitles would have helped. The first pressing of this set had re-arranged reels in the third movie on the first disc, ATTEMPT TO KILL, but Network corrected this in future pressings and had a replacement program if your disc still suffers from it. More information is available on the Network page for this set. The extras on the third disc include an image gallery, pdf promotional materials and an extra feature - THE WHITE TRAP directed by Sidney Hayers from the original story by Peter Barnes (The Ruling Class). A 12-page booklet with notes on each film and insightful essays on the series by Kim Newman rounds off each volume. Discs are labeled as region 2, but are actually region free. |
