Comments

Volume 3 of The Edgar Wallace Mystery series continues with 7 more films produced by Jack Greenwood and Merton Park Studios and an extra film BREAKOUT produced by Julian Wintle and Leslie Parkyn for Independent Artists on 3 dual-layered discs. THE SHARE OUT is the third mystery in the series featuring Bernard Lee as Supt. Meredith and Stanley Morgan as Sgt. Anson. CANDIDATE FOR MURDER has a husband hiring a hitman to kill off his actress wife, but the hitman might be double-crossing his contractor. SOLO FOR SPARROW is a heist story with some twists that features an early role for Michael Caine. PLAYBACK is a Double Indemnity-like story told in flashbacks with a beat cop tricked by a femme fatale to kill off her husband.

The StudioCanal logo starts off each film. The films are progressively transferred in theatrical aspect ratio of 1.65:1. The anamorphic transfers looks excellent, with strong contrast and very minimal damage on the prints. Some films suffer from poor soundtrack and this is where the optional English subtitles would have helped. The extras on the third disc include an image gallery, pdf promotional materials and an extra feature - BREAKOUT directed by Peter Graham Scott from the screenplay by Peter Barnes (The Ruling Class). A 12-page booklet with notes on each film and insightful essays on the series by Kim Newman rounds off each volume. Discs are labeled as region 2, but are actually region free.
