directed by Bernard Vorhaus
UK 1933
Suspense and wry humour abound in this classic murder mystery set
in an English country house one of the first films made in Britain by
influential American director Bernard Vorhaus, with a cast that includes former
child star Sally Blane, acclaimed British player Lewis Casson and comedy
stalwarts Hay Petrie and Hal Gordon. Released in 1933, Crime on the Hill
is featured here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements, in its
as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. |

Another competent and watchable, reasonably-priced, single-layered SD PAL transfer from Network out of the UK. Crime on the Hill is a short crime drama with some Pre-Code sexiness in the beginning. The video image may have a tinge of boosting but the overall visuals are very appealing even forgetting the film's age. Quite adept in-motion with few anomalies. Audio is fairly weak - as per the production quality of the period but dialogue is still audible with minor scattering. There are no subtitles on the region 2 disc. Extras include an image gallery and an original script PDF at the root of the single-layered SD disc. Fans of Pre-Code should be all over this, with its impressive fashion of the time and adult forwardness that would soon be smothered by the Hayes Code. I liked it enough to review and might even spin again one day! - Gary Tooze |
