(aka "The Hunter Will Get You")

Directed by Philippe Labro
France 1976

Screen legend Jean-Paul Belmondo (Le Professionnel, Le Doulos) is “L’Alpagueur,” a tough-as-nails mercenary named Roger Pilard who does what the police are unable to do—for a price, of course. After busting a drug-trafficking ring in Rotterdam, Pilard is put on the trail of “L’Épervier” (“The Hawk”), a ruthless thief who employs petty criminals to help him rob banks and then murders them. One of these criminals narrowly escapes death, but is captured and put in prison. Pilard, adopting a false identity, arranges to be placed in the same cell. There he learns how to track down “The Hawk,” who, in the meantime, has carried out a final act of vengeance. Will the hunter get his hawk? Bruno Cremer (The French Conspiracy, Sorcerer) also stars in this explosive French crime thriller from director Philippe Labro (Without Apparent Motive, The Inheritor). Two of the film's best features are the beautiful cinematography by Jean Penzer (Buffet Froid, The Night Caller) and the original musical score by Michel Colombier (Against All Odds, Cop). Special appearance by screen goddess Laura Antonelli (Malicious, Devil in the Flesh).

***

L'Alpagueur is a free-lance spy from the French secret agency. He's put on the investigation about L'epervier, a serial-killer who employs young boys to help him robbing banks before killing them.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (September 2021): Kino have transferred Philippe Labro's The Hunter Will Get You with Jean-Paul Belmondo to Blu-ray. It has a bit of a green cast and colors seem slightly faded - there is some teal infiltration. It's clean but shows its age. There are some minor inconsistencies and parts of the film do look quite strong with appealing depth. Overall it seems fairly average in terms of the 1080P visuals. It's on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate and I doubt it can look much better than this.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original French language. The Hunter Will Get You has quite a number of aggressive audio moments - usually in the form of gunfire - they have depth but don't rattle the floors.  The excellent score is by Michel Colombier (Deep Cover, Un Flic, Barb Wire, Colossus: The Forbin Project, Une Chambre en Ville. Against All Odds) adding at the correct moments to this actioner. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by my favorite trio; Howard S. Berger, Steve Mitchell and Nathaniel Thompson. Most of the conversation centre on Belmondo - his box-office dominance, his arthouse, tough guy and comedic roles. They discuss how he more than the French Bogart, his stunt sequences, the concept of being a character-actor in his on starring roles, they talk about Delon's paralleling career and how scary Bruno Cremer (his character kind of an homage to Jean-Pierre Melville) is in The Hunter Will Get You citing his other film roles. They again come across as super-educated film fans and fun and edifying to listen to. There is also an interesting 27-minute interview with writer / director Philippe Labro discussing his career. Lastly is a theatrical trailer.

Philippe Labro's The Hunter Will Get You is not a unique film. Another 'Jean-Paul Belmondo as tough guy' in a crime thriller - which certainly isn't a bad thing. This is not unlike Clint Eastwood in the arc of his many roles in US actioners. Sister Muriel Belmondo is in this briefly and uncredited Laura Antonelli. The Hunter Will Get You has some twists and I would rate it as above-average for its appealing genre. The Kino Blu-ray provides the film in 1080P, lossless audio, and an enjoyable commentary. Belmondo-completists (he's quite good in this) should strongly consider.
