Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray and 4K UHD captures were taken directly from the respective discs.

ADDITION: Subkultur 4K UHD (December 2024): Subkultur have transferred Rolf Olsen's The Devil's Girls to 4K UHD with a second disc Blu-ray with the feature in 1080P and extras. This 4K UHD transfer does have an HDR pass. It's reasonably mild but does exist. It looks quite pleasing in the HD presentations; very clean finely textured, solid contrast and pleasing detail. I thought it was a very satisfying HD presentation.

It is likely that the monitor you are seeing this review is not an HDR-compatible display (High Dynamic Range) or Dolby Vision, where each pixel can be assigned with a wider and notably granular range of color and light. Our capture software if simulating the HDR (in a uniform manner) for standard monitors. This should make it easier for us to review more 4K UHD titles in the future and give you a decent idea of its attributes on your system. So our captures may not support the exact same colors (coolness of skin tones, brighter or darker hues etc.) as the 4K system at your home. But the framing, detail, grain texture support etc. are, generally, not effected by this simulation representation.

We have reviewed the following 4K UHD packages recently: Requiem For a Vampire (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Block Island Sound (software uniformly simulated HDR), Bug (software uniformly simulated HDR), North By Northwest (software uniformly simulated HDR), Paper Moon, Bob le Flambeur (NO HDR applied to disc) Play Misty for Me (software uniformly simulated HDR), Signs (software uniformly simulated HDR), A Simple Plan (software uniformly simulated HDR), Fright, The Tenant (software uniformly simulated HDR), Gummo, Demon Pond, Happiness, Cheeky (software uniformly simulated HDR), Produced By Val Lewton , The Long Good Friday, The Ladykillers (software uniformly simulated HDR), Torso (software uniformly simulated HDR), All of Us Strangers, Last Year at Marienbad (NO HDR applied to disc), Peril & Distress (And Soon the Darkness / Sudden Terror) (NO HDR applied to disc), The Case of the Bloody Iris (software uniformly simulated HDR), Reptilicus (software uniformly simulated HDR), Risky Business (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Conversation (software uniformly simulated HDR), Perfect Days, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) (software uniformly simulated HDR), Le samoura๏  (software uniformly simulated HDR), Castle of Blood (software uniformly simulated HDR), Pat Garret and Billy the Kid (HDR), Fist of Legend (HDR), American Gigolo (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Long Wait (no HDR,) Bound (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Valiant Ones (software uniformly simulated HDR), Mute Witness (software uniformly simulated HDR), Narc (software uniformly simulated HDR), Peeping Tom (software uniformly simulated HDR), Dr. Terrors House of Horrors (software uniformly simulated HDR), High Noon (software uniformly simulated HDR), Picnic at Hanging Rock (Criterion) (software uniformly simulated HDR)

On their Blu-ray, and 4K UHD  Subkultur offer DTS-HD Master mono tracks (24-bit) in the original German language (either 'magnetic' or 'optical' choices) or a 16-bit English language DUB. The Devil's Girls has few gunfire but all aggression is mildly, and flatly, exported. The score is credited to Austrian orchestra leader and songwriter Erwin Halletz (who also performed as Ren้ Roulette) but notable is the songs by Scottish-born Don Adams (with Ariola); Dirty Angels ("Crime Does Not Pay") that I can't get out of my head - and A New Day (sold together on a 45rmp.) He was a rhythm and blues singer from Glasgow who moved to Munich in the 1960s and performed with 'Love Generation' and then 'Les Humphries Singers'. This adds another flavorful, funky, layer to the film. Subkultur offer optional German or English subtitles on their respective Region FREE Blu-ray and 4K UHD discs.

The second disc Subkultur Blu-ray offers an hour long interview with Angelica Spiehs ('Ott') - who played 'Doris' in the film and was married to producer of The Devil's Girls, Karl Spiehs - also is Austrian screenwriter, film producer and production manager Erich Tomek. The video piece is entitled "Two Lives for the Lisa Film" and is fairly revealing. It is in German with optional English subtitles. "The Cruel Dolls of Trieste" is a narrator-less 20-minute location featurette showing past and present locales from the film. There are trailer, the English Credit sequences and a picture gallery. The package has a 20-page booklet with an essay by Stefan Jung in German only. Amazon.DE offers two alternate cover options.

The 4K UHD has only the feature plus German and English trailers.

Rolf Olsen's delightfully eccentric The Devil's Girls is a mixture of bad-girl crime drama, mild sexploitation, women-in-prison yarn, Krimi, and Edgar Wallace seasoned with a few caper-comedy foils. It may be the first women-in-prison flic to reach 4K UHD. Amusingly this plot is set in Scotland where the Glasgow Telegraph newspaper has German headlines, but the miracle of high-res shows us, unrelated, English text. The Devil's Girls was a 'Lisa Film' - which was a German film production company founded in Munich in 1964 by Paul L๖winger. In 1967 Karl Spiehs (Swedish Wife Exchange Club, Moment's Caress, How to Seduce a Playboy) joined the company and took over production and sole control of the company. One of the most appealing attributes of The Devil's Girls was that I had absolutely no idea where it was going. I really enjoyed it as an off-beat 60's German thriller in the vein of a Roger Corman / Russ Myer-ish biker-gal movie. For some reason I was also reminded of The Horrors of Spider Island, although there is only marginal overlap (German, black and white, 60s, lots of gals etc.) The Subkultur 4K UHD looks marvelous. The Devil's Girls is such a unique genre-rich film looking probably better than it did in the cinema almost 60 years ago. To each his own.
