The Complete Confessions, 1974–1977 [ 4 X Blu-ray]

Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974)
Confessions of a Pop Performer (Norman Cohen, 1975)
Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Norman Cohen, 1976)
Confessions From a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977)

Rosie Dixon - Night Nurse (Justin Cartwright, 1978)

Robin Askwith (Britannia Hospital) stars in The Complete Confessions, 1974–1977, the definitive collection of the celebrated British sex-comedy series. Based on the pseudonymous Timothy Lea novels by screenwriter Christopher Wood (The Spy Who Loved Me), each installment follows the fortunes of the feckless and accident-prone – yet seemingly irresistible – Timmy (Askwith) as he gets embroiled in the money-making schemes of his brother-in-law Sidney Noggett (Anthony Booth, Corruption).

The fun starts in Confessions of a Window Cleaner, as Timmy must satisfy the demands of a clientele of lonely housewives whilst attempting to woo police officer Liz (Linda Hayden, The Blood on Satan’s Claw). In Confessions of a Pop Performer, Timmy endures the ups and downs (and ins and outs) of the music business when he joins a band managed by Sid. With Confessions of a Driving Instructor, Timmy finds his female students fumbling for his gearstick. Finally, in Confessions from a Holiday Camp, entertainment officer Timmy struggles to organize a beauty contest under the watchful eye of the camp’s tyrannical new manager.

Directed by Val Guest (The Full Treatment) and Norman Cohen (Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers), this classic quartet features a supporting cast of British comedy greats, including Bill Maynard (Oh No It’s Selwyn Froggitt), Doris Hare (On the Buses), Windsor Davies (Endless Night), John Le Mesurier (The Wrong Box), and Liz Fraser (Adventures of a Taxi Driver). As beloved by audiences as they were reviled by critics, the Confessions series sparked a string of imitators, and stand as a time capsule of the fashions and attitudes of 1970s Britain. Along with an array of new commentaries and interviews, this Blu-ray premiere collection also includes producer Greg Smith’s follow-up feature film, Rosie Dixon – Night Nurse, which was adapted from Christopher Wood’s Confessions of a Night Nurse.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Indicator Blu-ray (August 2024): Indicator have transferred The Complete Confessions, 1974–1977 to Blu-ray. This includes 1080P renderings of Confessions of a Window Cleaner, Confessions of a Pop Performer, Confessions of a Driving Instructor, and Confessions from a Holiday Camp . Included is a standard definition, 1080P bump, presentation of the film Rosie Dixon – Night Nurse from 1978. These are on 4 Blu-ray discs. Image quality is a function of the sources - which are not too bad. They are relatively consistent with some grain without any appreciable sharpness. They are still very watchable with frequent examples of depth - probably accurate to the original production. Rosie Dixon with an SD-bump (15 Gig / 20 Mbps) appears quite soft. Hopefully our screen captures below will give you an idea of the HD presentations.

NOTE: We have added 100 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Indicator use linear PCM mono tracks (24-bit) in the original English language. There are comedic effects, pratfalls, sped-up cinematography ala Benny Hill etc. but nothing that ventures beyond the mono constraints. For Val Guest's Confessions of a Window Cleaner the score was by Sam Sklair (The Orchard End Murder.) All the other films, including Rosie Dixon - Night Nurse had scores by English songwriter, composer, conductor and arranger Ed Welch (Virgin Soldiers.) He had a long collaboration Spike Milligan. His songs have been recorded by Cilla Black, Davy Jones, Shirley Bassey, Matt Monro and others. Confessions of a Pop Performer was the only film in the series to spawn a soundtrack album with musical numbers produced by Welch. The scores follow the, often, absurd and slapstick, circumstances of the films. They sound clear and buoyant in the uncompressed transfers. Indicator offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'B'-locked Blu-rays.

The Indicator Blu-ray package offers All-new audio commentaries on all four Confessions film by the much-loved star of the series, 73-year old Robin Askwith. He had quite a run in the late 60's through the 70s in films like Lindsay Anderson's If...., plus Otley, Pasolini's The Canterbury Tales, horror films like Tower of Evil, The Flesh and Blood Show, Horror Hospital (1973) and even Carry On Girls. I look forward to indulging in his commentaries. There are two other audio options; a BEHP Interview with Val Guest is an archival audio recording of the Confessions of a Window Cleaner director in conversation with Roy Fowler. There is also another 1988 BEHP interview - this time with Geoffrey Foot - an archival audio recording of the editor of three Confessions films, and Rosie Dixon – Night Nurse, in conversation with Sidney Cole and Alan Lawson. Confessions of a Film Composer is a new 1/4 hour interview with 75-years young prolific film and TV composer Ed Welch, the man responsible for scoring three Confessions movies, and Rosie Dixon – Night Nurse. Hey, Judy! has cult film actress Judy Matheson (The Mary Milligan Film Collection) recalls working alongside veteran director Val Guest (The Day of Earth Caught Fire), and co-star Robin Askwith, during the production of Confessions of a Window Cleaner. This is also new ands runs 16-minutes. Cunning Stunts is also new and has Britain's most celebrated stunt performer, Rocky Taylor, recalls highlights from his sixty-year career, and talks about his experiences working on Confessions of a Pop Performer and Confessions of a Driving Instructor running shy of 1/4 hour. There is also a new, brief, interview with David Hamilton - the veteran broadcaster recalls his cameo appearance in Confessions of a Pop Performer and a 7-minute new interview with Esta Charkham as the prolific casting director discusses Rosie Dixon – Night Nurse and the unique job of casting a British sex comedy. Included is a 34-minute 2-part Super 8 version of Confessions of a Driving Instructor - a pared down home-cinema presentation in 16mm - and original theatrical trailers and image galleries of all the films. The package has a limited edition exclusive 120-page book with a new essay by Simon Sheridan, archival interviews and articles, and film credits.

Christopher Wood's Confession novels and films (which he wrote as Timothy Lea) involve sex-comedies of the British variety with innuendos and humorous attempts involving copulation in varying degrees of undress. Each film centers on the erotic occupational adventures of the lead played by Robin Askwith. There is a similarity to the Stanley Long's Adventures (only with a taxi driver, private eye and plumber as the employment) also released on Blu-ray by Indicator. Askwith's character of Timothy is either trying to get laid or being approached by older women for such purpose. There are plenty of amusing adventures frequently involving miscommunication. I suspect the nostalgia value will be strong for some viewers. They're silly at times with plots being secondary... and lots of bare breasts, girls bending over in short skirts - and a few shots of Askwith's bare butt. Rosie Dixon – Night Nurse is a welcome addition even in the lower quality and has the uniformed protagonist getting into similar provocative sexcapades with Doctors and patients while at work in the hospital. The Indicator Blu-ray package is at their usual very high standard with abundant extras, new commentaries, BEHP audio, interviews, booklet and more. Fans will enjoy pointing out repeat performers like Linda Hayden (Taste the Blood of Dracula, she also had a brief role in The Boys from Brazil) in the first and last Confessions entries - Timothy's sister 'Rosie' in all four films played by Sheila White (Alfie Darling,) Melissa Stribling (Hammer's 1958 Dracula), Liz Fraser (Adventures of a Taxi Driver, Adventures of a Private Eye and multiple Carry On films) in both Confessions from a Holiday Camp and Rosie Dixon – Night Nurse - Judy Matheson (Twins of Evil, Lust for a Vampire) and Sue Upton (of Benny Hill fame)... among others. I think you know what you are getting here. Certainly this is recommended to fans.
