(aka "The Evil Twins" or "The Virgin Vampires" or "Twins of Dracula" or "The Gemini Twins" )

directed by John Hough
UK 1971

Two beautiful orphaned identical twins, Maria and Frieda Gellhorn (Playboy centerfold models Mary and Madeleine Collinson), move to the village of Karnstein to live with their uncle Gustav Weil (played by Hammer horror favorite, Peter Cushing), a fanatical puritan and leader of the local witch-hunting Brotherhood. The village Count (Damien Thomas, Never Let Me Go), an evil man who secretly practices Satanism, uses black magic and transforms into a vampire. Unhappy with her new life, Frieda seeks escape and tragically falls under the spell of the Count. Now overcome with an insatiable hunger for human blood, Frieda has to hide her secret from her sister, and escape her uncle's killing grasp! The wait is over! This Hammer horror classic is now available from Synapse Films in an all-new 1080p high definition transfer and loaded with exciting exclusive special features. Also stars Kathleen Byron (Black Narcissus), David Warbeck (Lucio Fulci's The Beyond) and Dennis Price (Jess Franco's Vampyros Lesbos)!

Comments

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Synapse - Region 'A' - Blu-ray (July 2012): Thanks to Eric for the SD captures. I think it's easy to see the superiority of the 1080P - in just about every visuals facet - notably colors (skin tones) and detail. The green haze of the DVD has been replaced with crisp tighter hues. The Blu-ray is in the original 1.66:1 aspect ratio and shows a shade less information on the side edges but significantly more on the bottom - which some fans may note as meaning 'more cleavage'. The brighter Blu-ray provides a dramatically improved presentation frequently appearing pristine. Big thumbs up for the video transfer.

The audio is lossless via a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel at 1658 kbps. Effect sounds are buoyant with some depth and dialogue is clean and clear. Synapse include an optional Isolated Music & Effects Track also in uncompressed. There are optional English subtitles on the Region 'A' Blu-ray disc.

Supplements are stacked with a feature length documentary entitled The Flesh and the Fury: X-Posing Twins of Evil all about the film from production cast and more. There is also a featurette - The Props That Hammer Built: The Kinsey Collection running almost 25-minutes focusing on the many of the props used in Twins of Evil and other Hammer films of that era. There are also tidbits like a Stills Gallery, trailers, TV Spots and a short deleted scene. Included in the package is a 2nd disc DVD of the film (obviously in SD) with the Flesh and the Fury documentary and the US theatrical trailer.

I love seeing Hammer films come to Blu-ray and this is a beauty. Cushing, burning witches, vampires, plenty of cleavage - and all looking marvelous in the glory of 1080P. Full marks for the Blu-ray package and we give it a strong recommendation!
