ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Rob Reiner's beloved The Princess Bride has a mysterious pirate, a vengeful Spaniard, and a good-natured giant, in a tale full of swashbuckling, romance with not too much kissing. Criterion's beautiful Blu-ray release celebrates this joyous film in a must-own package. Felix E. Feist's The Man Who Cheated Himself has greed, unstoppable sexual attraction, and betrayal leading a once upstanding citizen down a dark, dead-end, alley. Essential Noir rescued from PD DVD purgatory - thanks to the Blu-ray from Flicker Alley. Irresistible. Stefan Uher's The Miraculous Virgin is a wonderfully imaginative surreal piece of cinema with a poetic sense running throughout and it gets a, Region FREE, Blu-ray release from Second Run - watch it. Hal Ashby's Shampoo is a pointed commentary on the demise of 1960s idealism at the dawn of the Nixon era set in 24-hours of a lothario Beverly Hills hairdresser - on Blu-ray via Criterion. Jackie Chan's action-packed, fun, non-stop thrillers Police Story and Police Story 2 have come to 4K restorations on Blu-ray from Eureka. Brian De Palma's Sisters - horror, voyeurism and a beautiful model separated from her Siamese twin. Delicious early 70's that get a new 4K digital restoration to Blu-ry from Criterion. Rainer Werner Fassbinder's impacting Eight Hours Don't Make a Day 8-hour TV mini-series gets the Criterion Blu-ray treatment - wowser. Cornel Wilde's The Naked Prey remains a special entry in the cinema of actors-turned-auteurs - a violent exploration of the nature of man that Criterion are also releasing on Blu-ray. Kino has put the unique sci-fi crime-thriller "Retroactive" to Blu-ray. The film is stylish, inventive and entertaining as heck. Cabin Boy is a cult classic is the comedic vein of so baaad it's good and get a stacked special edition Blu-ray from Kino. Shot is an Indie action-thriller from the early 70s and now works brilliantly as a quintessential, pioneering, artefact of its time fascination combines with nostalgia. On Blu-ray with appreciation from the passionate at Vinegar Syndrome. Joe Dante's Hollywood Boulevard is a satire on the 70s B-movie industry and Scorpion Releasing have given it a strong Blu-ray release - already OOP. BAT*21 is a desperate war-thriller with Gene Hackman - on Blu-ray with director commentary from Kino. Peter Hunt's Gold is a Roger Moore actioner set uniquely in the South African gold procurement space. The Kino Blu-ray includes a great commentary. John Landis' Schlock can be described by "Carnage! Terror! Banana skins!" This comedy revolves around an ape-like creature with a sense of the absurd. The fun begins with a Region FREE Blu-ray from Arrow. Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami is a documentary exploring an electrifying journey through the public and private worlds of pop culture mega-icon Grace Jones who defined her presence when Lady Gaga was in diapers. Highly interesting on Kino Blu-ray. Donald Shebib's Goin' Down the Road is a Canadian classic 1970 film about two young and uneducated Maritimers who become overwhelmed with the trappings of big city life. The Alliance Blu-ray has, unfortunately, bastardized the film experience. Federico Fellini's first color feature Juliet of the Spirits is on a new Cult Film's Blu-ray that offers a Kat Ellinger commentary but a sub-standard transfer. Regrettably, we continue to wait. On DVD Eric reviewed All Together Now - an Australian TV comedy bout a one-time Rock'n'Roll star who discovers he has 15-year-old twins when his former lover dies in a plane crash. I watched Picture of Beauty - it strives for both poetic and erotic sensibilities with an appealing artistic theme throughout and is filled with many lithe, and occasionally naked, Easton European babes. Hmmm...

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Police Story BD - It all begins here! Director-star Jackie Chan's celebrated Police Story series began with this classic action comedy, which features the inimitable Jackie Chan charm and some of the most spectacular action sequences ever put to film. Jackie Chan is cop Chan Ka Kui, who's assigned to guard beautiful witness Selina (Brigitte Lin), the girlfriend of evil drug kingpin Chor Yuen. Selina's presence causes some friction between Chan and his petulant girlfriend May (international star Maggie Cheung), but when the bad guys come-a-calling, all that gets left behind. Glass breaks, bones crunch, and anything and everything becomes a weapon in Police Story! Eureka Blu-ray Release date: August 20th, 2018

Police Story 2 BD - As if Hong Kong needed more collateral damage from Jackie Chan, along comes Police Story 2, the follow-up to the immensely successful Police Story! Jackie Chan returns as cop Chan Ka Kui, who's saddled with a trio of problematic plots that would bring even down the toughest guy. Some mad bombers are threatening Hong Kong, so Chan is put on the case to sniff out the bad guys. However, Chan simultaneously must contend with the creeps from the original Police Story, who've returned to annoy him with their smarmy attitudes. AND there's Chan's increasingly grumpy girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung, given a bigger role in this sequel), who's a little sick and tired of playing second-fiddle to drug dealers and mad bombers. Eureka Blu-ray Release date: August 20th, 2018

Eight Hours Don't Make a Day BD - Commissioned to make a working-class family drama for public television, up-and-coming director Rainer Werner Fassbinder took the assignment and ran, dodging expectations by depicting social realities in West Germany from a critical—yet far from cynical—perspective. Over the course of five episodes, the sprawling story tracks the everyday triumphs and travails of the young toolmaker Jochen (Gottfried John) and many of the people populating his world, including the woman he loves (Hanna Schygulla), his eccentric family, and his fellow workers, with whom he bands together to improve conditions on the factory floor. Blu-ray Release Date: October 9th, 2018

Hollywood Boulevard BD - Welcome to Miracle Pictures...where "If it's a good film, it's a miracle!" This hilarious tribute to the unsung heroes of low-budget filmmaking is an enduring tale of all would-be actresses seeking to make it in Hollywood as a young ditsy pretty blond arrives in Hollywood to try her luck as an actress. After some mishap, a shady agent finds her a job with a sleazy B-movie crew plagued by strange deadly accidents. Now restored in HD from the original camera negatives! Blu-ray Release Date: August, 2018

The Miraculous Virgin BD - Adapted by The Sun in a Net director Stefan Uher from the renowned 1944 novella by Dominik Tatarka, the film is an exquisite, surreal odyssey through the Slovak art scene of the 1960s. The mysterious Anabella (Knife in the Water's Jolanta Umecka) casts a spell over a group of young artists to become their muse, awakening desires and providing inspiration. Few works have embraced or expressed the notion of artistic fervour as wholeheartedly as The Miraculous Virgin. Blu-ray Release Date: August 20th, 2018

The Princess Bride BD - A high-spirited adventure that pits true love against inconceivable odds, The Princess Bride has charmed legions of fans with its irreverent gags, eccentric ensemble, and dazzling swordplay. A kid (Fred Savage), home sick from school, grudgingly allows his grandfather (Peter Falk) to read him a dusty storybook—which is how we meet the innocent Buttercup (Robin Wright, in her breakout role), about to marry the nefarious Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon) though her heart belongs to Westley (Cary Elwes). The wedding plans are interrupted, however, by a mysterious pirate, a vengeful Spaniard, and a good-natured giant, in a tale full of swashbuckling, romance, and outrageously hilarious spoofery. Directed by Rob Reiner from an endlessly quotable script by William Goldman, The Princess Bride reigns as a fairy-tale classic. Criterion Blu-ray Release date: October 30th, 2018

Shampoo BD - Shampoo gives us a day in the life of George (Warren Beatty), a Beverly Hills hairdresser and lothario who runs around town on the eve of the 1968 presidential election trying to make heads or tails of his financial and romantic entanglements. His attempts to scrape together the money to open his own salon are continually sidetracked by the distractions presented by his lovers—played brilliantly by Goldie Hawn, Julie Christie, and Lee Grant (in an Oscar-winning performance). Beatty dreamed up the project, cowrote the script with Robert Towne, and enlisted Hal Ashby as director, and the resulting carousel of doomed relationships is an essential seventies farce, a sharp look back at the sexual politics and self-absorption of the preceding decade. Blu-ray Release Date: October 16th / November 5th, 2018

The Naked Prey BD - Glamorous leading man turned idiosyncratic auteur Cornel Wilde created in the sixties and seventies a handful of gritty, violent explorations of the nature of man, none more memorable than The Naked Prey. In the early nineteenth century, after an ivory-hunting safari offends an African tribe, the colonialists are captured and hideously tortured. Only Wilde's marksman is released, without clothes or weapons, to be hunted for sport, and he embarks on a harrowing journey through savanna and jungle, back to a primitive state. Criterion Blu-ray Release Date: October 2nd, 2018

Goin' Down the Road BD - Don Shebib’s definitive 1970 film is about two young and uneducated Maritimers who leave the desolation of Nova Scotia and head for the legendary opportunities of Toronto. Even when contacts fall through and they are forced to spend their first nights at the Salvation Army, both men maintain an optimistic sense of adventure as they encounter offbeat characters in a variety of humorous situations. However, as their prospects begin to fade, optimism gives way to frustration and loneliness. Blu-ray Release Date: May 15th, 2012

The Man Who Cheated Himself BD - Blinded by love, homicide lieutenant Ed Cullen (Lee J. Cobb) goes to great lengths to cover up a murder. His coquettish girlfriend Lois (Jane Wyatt) has killed her scheming husband before he could bump her off. John Dall co-stars as Ed's kid brother Andy, a rookie on the force who is determined to break his first big case. These accomplished actors are nearly eclipsed by the incandescent star power of San Francisco and especially the world's most photographed bridge, the Golden Gate. Blu-ray Release Date: September 25th, 2018

Sisters BD - Margot Kidder is Danielle, a beautiful model separated from her Siamese twin, Dominique. When a hotshot reporter (Jennifer Salt) suspects Dominique of a brutal murder, she becomes dangerously ensnared in the sisters' insidious sibling bond. A scary and stylish paean to female destructiveness, Brian De Palma's first foray into horror voyeurism is a stunning amalgam of split-screen effects, bloody birthday cakes, and a chilling score by frequent Hitchcock collaborator Bernard Herrmann. Criterion Blu-ray Release Date: October 23rd, 2018

Juliet of the Spirits BD - Cinematographer Gianni di Venanzo’s masterful use of Technicolor transforms Juliet of the Spirits, Fellini’s first color feature, into a kaleidoscope of dreams, spirits, and memories. Giulietta Masina plays a betrayed wife whose inability to come to terms with reality leads her along a hallucinatory journey of self-discovery. Blu-ray Release Date: September 24th, 2018

Gold BD - Peter Hunt directed this old fashioned -- if not reactionary -- action film about gold-mining in South Africa. The story concerns a nefarious scheme to control the international price of gold by sabotaging the country's largest gold mine, flooding it with an underground sea. Hurry Hirschfeld (Ray Milland) is a cranky but kind millionaire who owns the gold mine. His granddaughter, Terry Steyner (Susannah York), is a beautiful women suffering from the old ennui. She happens to be married to chief bad-guy Manfred Steyner (Bradford Dillman), who, along with unscrupulous international tycoon Farrell (John Gielgud), hatches the plot to flood Hurry's gold- mine. To the rescue comes Rod Slater (Roger Moore) and his faithful black sidekick Big King (Simon Sabela), ready to right the wrongs and stem the tide in order to make South Africa safe for cheap black labor. Blu-ray Release Date: September 18th, 2018

Schlock BD - Carnage! Terror! Banana skins! The mighty prehistoric ape Schlocktropus has emerged from hiding to embark on a full-scale rampage across a quiet Southern Californian suburb. The police are baffled. The army is powerless. The body count is rising. But when Schlocktropus encounters a kindly blind woman (Eliza Garrett) who sees beyond his grotesque visage, the homicidal simian is presented with a chance at redemption. Blu-ray Release Date: October 15th-16th, 2018

BAT*21 BD - Based on a true story, Bat 21 follows the harrowing adventures of Lt. Colonel Iceal Hambleton (Gene Hackman), whose plane is shot down over enemy territory while on reconnaissance behind enemy lines in Vietnam. Because Hambleton used to call the shots from behind a desk, he lacks combat survival experience and is forced to adapt while the enemy surrounds him on all sides. As the Air Force plans a risky rescue mission, he is befriended by pilot Bartholomew Clark (Danny Glover), who can't land to pick up Hambleton due to the enemy activity but keeps him company by radio. Hambleton's plight takes a turn for the worse once the brass decide to execute an intensive bombing mission in the area, whether or not they can rescue Hambleton. Blu-ray Release Date: September 18th, 2018

Retroactive BD - Science fiction crime thriller from Louis Morneau, genre director and graduate of the Roger Corman school of filmmaking. Kylie Travis stars as Karen, a psychiatrist and former hostage negotiator with the Chicago Police Department. After a negotiation gone lethally wrong, Karen has quit and returned home to Texas, where her car breaks down on the side of the highway. Picked up by Frank (James Belushi) and his ex-wife Rayanne (Shannon Whirry), it becomes quickly evident that Frank, a psychotically violent and jealous man, is involved in some sort of illegal activity involving a stolen computer disk. Blu-ray Release Date: September 18th, 2018

Cabin Boy BD - A cult classic for fancy lads everywhere, Cabin Boy was met with a frothy blend of confusion and hostility upon first release, but has aged like a fine flagon of wine. From Chris Elliott and Adam Resnick, co-creators of the influential deconstructed sitcom Get a Life, Cabin Boy is one of the most surreal comedies ever released by a major Hollywood studio. After graduating from finishing school as a well-bred “Fancy Lad,” Nathanial Mayweather (Chris Elliott) prepares for a trip to Hawaii. But his plans are dashed when he mistakenly boards The Filthy Whore, a fishing boat manned by a ragtag crew of salty shipmates, and soon becomes the vessel’s hapless Cabin Boy. On his journey, he woos the feisty but beautiful Trina (Melora Walters) and encounters a host of eye-rubbing curiosities including an amiable shark man, a savage ice monster, a tobacco-chewing cupcake, and a six-armed seductress... Blu-ray Release Date: September 18th, 2018

Shot BD - Semi-urban detective duo Ross and Wilson have been charged with taking down local drug kingpin, Blasi. After busting a low-level pusher, they convince his girlfriend, Sheila, to start working for them as an undercover operative in exchange for avoiding prison. But as Ross finds himself becoming romantically interested in his new, perpetually spaced out informant, Blasi continues to strengthen his crime empire, setting his sights on even loftier, and deadlier, ambitions. Blu-ray Release Date: August 28th, 2018

Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami BD - This electrifying journey through the public and private worlds of pop culture mega-icon Grace Jones contrasts musical sequences with intimate personal footage, all the while brimming with Jones’s bold aesthetic. A larger-than-life entertainer, an androgynous glam-pop diva, an unpredictable media presence – Grace Jones is all these things and more. Sophie Fiennes’s documentary goes beyond the traditional music biography, offering a portrait as stylish and unconventional as its subject. Blu-ray Release Date: August 14th, 2018

DVD Release Date: March 14th, 2017

All Together Now - Attempting to close the generation gap, popular Aussie sitcom All Together Now ran for four successful seasons, playing out 101 madcap episodes of nostalgic rock 'n' roll fuelled family comedy from 1991 - 1993.
