If you could leap back in time and change the past, would you? If you did, could you face the consequences? A young woman comes face to face with these tantalizing questions in this action-packed sci-fi thriller starring James Belushi (Salvador), Kylie Travis (Sanctuary), M. Emmet Walsh (Blood Simple) and Frank Whaley (Career Opportunities). Exploding with breathtaking special effects and startling twists and turns, this full-throttle adventure pushes the envelope for cutting-edge excitement. Karen (Travis) is a beautiful hostage negotiator trying to escape a tragic past. But her desperate flight leads to an even greater horror when she finds herself stranded on a deserted highway and at the mercy of a violent psychopath who commits a brutal murder right before her eyes. But this time, Karen gets a second chance… stumbling upon an isolated research center, she meets a brilliant young scientist and discovers a top-secret device that gives her the opportunity to stop the savage rampage before it begins. Stylishly directed by Louis Morneau (Soldier Boyz).

Science fiction crime thriller from Louis Morneau, genre director and graduate of the Roger Corman school of filmmaking. Kylie Travis stars as Karen, a psychiatrist and former hostage negotiator with the Chicago Police Department. After a negotiation gone lethally wrong, Karen has quit and returned home to Texas, where her car breaks down on the side of the highway. Picked up by Frank (James Belushi) and his ex-wife Rayanne (Shannon Whirry), it becomes quickly evident that Frank, a psychotically violent and jealous man, is involved in some sort of illegal activity involving a stolen computer disk. During a break at a truck stop, Frank murders Rayanne. Karen escapes to a nearby government installation, where Brian (Frank Whaley), a scientist, is working on a time travel device. Karen uses the machine to turn back the clock a few hours and try to prevent Frank's murderous rampage, but her interference only makes things worse. Returning again and again to the past, Karen only succeeds in adding fuel to Frank's fire.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Kino bring the sci-fi thriller "Retroactive" to a single-layered Blu-ray in 1080p with a high bitrate. The film is transferred in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Retroactive looks a shade soft, but it is consistent and the thick look could be similar t the original appearance. There are quite a few impressive scenes - kudos to DoP George Mooradian who did some work on Escape from New York and the 1990 Dick Tracy. Retroactive has plenty of close-ups to showcase the high resolution detail. Overall it leans to heavy as opposed to crisp;

There is a 16-bit DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio track. Retroactive has a handful of 'zingy' sci-fi related effects and, of course, plenty of gunplay and growling car engines. The lossless transfer exports some depth. There is a
score by Tim Truman (Melrose Place and more TV work, and a few films) and a couple of songs each by Engelbert Humperdinck, Chris Anderson and Trio de Mandinga. They add some nice flavor to the Texas desert. There are optional English subtitles on this Region-A-locked Blu-ray.

Kino only offer a theatrical trailer on this
Blu-ray with a few trailers of other films.

Retroactive is like a cross between a neo-noir and Groundhog Day - and I enjoyed it... and Kylie Travis who wasn't nearly in enough watchable films. The Kino
Blu-ray is essentially bare-bones but there is value for those who will embrace this unique thriller in a great setting. It's 37% OFF at the writing of this review.
