ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville on Blu-ray from Kino gets top nod this abbreviated week. One of the director's least-denase films, a pulpy and noirish science-fiction with a new, gorgeous, 4K-restoration and a Tim Lucas commentary. A 'must own' for sure. Robert Altman's underappreciated Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean comes to Masters of Cinema Blu-ray - a robust transfer - with a new commentary. Delightful. One of the most pure young boy's adventure series comes to Blu-ray from Warner Archive; Jonny Quest - The Complete Series is rich in nostalgia has great animation and will allow the older kids to re-embrace their childhood. What a theme song and opening too! Midnight Lace is a gem of a 'damsel in distress' thriller. Kino's Blu-ray offers another revealing Kat Ellinger commentary. Arrow continue with horror obscura from the golden age of US independent genre moviemaking releasing American Horror Project Vol. 2 on Blu-ray. Three fringe genre films - each with a brand new commentary!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean BD - Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean is one of the wonderful highlights of an under-appreciated chapter of director Robert Altman's career. Between the box office disappointment of Popeye (1980) and the explosive comeback of The Player (1992), Altman returned to lower-budgeted, independent filmmaking, often boldly experimenting with how theatre work could be inventively adapted for cinema and television. This period of Altman's oeuvre also includes such masterworks as Streamers (1983), Secret Honor (1984), and Tanner '88 (1988), but was initiated by Come Back, and this funny, touching film of the play by Ed Graczyk (who adapted it for the screen) is a triumph. Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Release Date: July 22nd, 2019

American Horror Project Vol. 2 BD - Continuing its mission to unearth the very best in weird and wonderful horror obscura from the golden age of US independent genre moviemaking, Arrow Video is proud to present the long-awaited second volume in its American Horror Project series co-curated by author Stephen Thrower. Starting off with a little-seen 1970 offering from underrated cult auteur John Hayes, Dream No Evil is a haunting, moving tale of a young woman s desperate quest to be reunited with her long-lost father only to find herself drawn into a fantasyland of homicidal madness. Meanwhile, 1976's Dark August stars Academy Award-winner Kim Hunter in a story of a man pursued by a terrifying and deadly curse in the wake of a hit-and-run accident. Lastly, 1977's Harry Novak-produced The Child is a gloriously delirious slice of horror mayhem in which a young girl raises an army of the dead against the people she holds responsible for her mother s death. Blu-ray Release Date: June 25th, 2019

Alphaville BD - One of Godard's most sheerly enjoyable movies, a dazzling amalgam of film noir and science fiction in which tough gumshoe Lemmy Caution turns inter-galactic agent to re-enact the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice by conquering Alpha 60, the strange automated city from which such concepts as love and tenderness have been banished. As in Antonioni's The Red Desert (made the previous year), Godard's theme is alienation in a technological society, but his shotgun marriage between the poetry of legend and the irreverence of strip cartoons takes the film into entirely idiosyncratic areas. Not the least astonishing thing is the way Raoul Coutard's camera turns contemporary Paris into an icily dehumanised city of the future. Blu-ray Release Date: July 9th, 2019

Jonny Quest - The Complete Series BD - TV's first animated action-adventure series is about to take you on a breathless ride. All 26 episodes charting the fantastic exploits of brave and brainy 11-year-old Jonathan Quest are yours in a 3-disc set. Unlike the outrageous fantasy plots of cartoons that preceded it, Jonny Quest drew on science and detective-style logic to solve mysteries and apprehend sophisticated villains. Viewers were transported to exotic locales as Jonny's dad, Dr. Benton Quest, tackled each new government assignment, aided by ex-agent Race Bannon, Indian boy Hadji, family bulldog Bandit... and, of course, his fearless son Jonny. Blu-ray Release Date: June 11th, 2019

Midnight Lace BD - Although its theatrical origins (Janet Green's Matilda Shouted Fire) aren't exactly disguised, this is a smoothly efficient variation on the 'frightened lady' thriller. Just married to English businessman Harrison, Day's the American in London progressively unraveling after threatening anonymous phone calls and voices in the fog. Perhaps surprisingly for an actress who always seemed to keep plenty in reserve, her hysteria's pretty full-on, and the taut screenplay keeps up the pressure with a string of worthy suspects (wheedling McDowall, scheming Marshall, disturbed war vet Gavin).
