BIG THANKS!: DVDBeaver would not exist without the support of many patrons - those who generously donate, and especially those who use our Amazon(s), Barnes & Noble, TCM, Warner Archive and YesAsia links. That's it. When you go to Amazon - PLEASE use one of our links to get there (they are on every page - top and bottom - and we have 5000 webpages). It costs you absolutely nothing and we get a small commission on items you purchase. This helps pay our bills - in fact it's the only thing that pays our bills.
STRATEGIES: The best way to take full advantage of Amazon is to use...
PRE-ORDERs - lock in at the discount price by ORDERING - if perchance you decide against the purchase you have until the release date to cancel - at no charge AND if you will purchase more than 35 DVDs (or anything) in a 365 day period (and live in the Continental US) it makes excellent financial sense to subscribe to Amazon Prime

NOTE: If there are DVD or Blu-ray titles you'd like us to cover - please feel free to recommend!

ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Although our review is incomplete due to the package's size - Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho Legacy Blu-ray Collection gets the premium mention this week. It has the uncensored Psycho - missing parts scanned and restored in HD from a German 35mm print. Plus it has all the sequels. Another unique package is Diskino's Blu-ray of Zhuangzhuang Tian's The Horse Thief that includes 3/4 of an hour of Tony Rayns. It has the distinction of being ranked #1 on Martin Scorsese's personal list (TOP of the 90's although made in the 80s). Both Nicolas Roeg's Walkabout and Jane Campion's An Angel at My Table are both masterpieces that Umbrella (out of Australia) have given them Region 'B' Blu-ray releases. Must see films. Colin was thrilled with Chang-dong Lee's Burning, now on Blu-ray from Well Go USA, - many citing it as the best film of later year. Speaking of which, Dawson City - Frozen Time is considered the best documentary of 2017 - a fascinating film experience - now on Region FREE Blu-ray from Second Run. Todd Haynes' Far From Heaven is highly deserved of a stacked Blu-ray releases and Kino have produced it - a sly homage to the rich, Sirkian, melodramas of the 1950s. Brilliant. There is a wave of enthusiastic anticipation for John Frankenheimer's The Iceman Cometh - Colin has fully reviewed the Blu-ray from Kino. I loved seeing Laura again - one of the most celebrated 1940s film noirs now on Masters of Cinema's Region 'B' Blu-ray. One of the finest British war films ever made, Sink the Bismarck tells the true story of one of World War II s most notorious sea battles, Eureka have added it to their catalogue of fine Blu-ray releases. A must-own of its genre. Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub's The Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach reaches Blu-ray status thank to Grasshopper Films - the format of Bach's music is utilized to etch a minimalist love story of enormous richness. Pure cinema. Arrow have brought De Palma & De Niro: The Early Films to Blu-ray with three comedy-drama films from the celebrated director and actor. Frank Tashlin's Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? gets a Twilight Time Region FREE Blu-ray release. 3D fans will want to indulge in Jivaro on Kino Blu-ray - an Amazon jungle adventure with Fernando Lamas and Rhonda Fleming. 1937's Stand-In - a screwball comedy with Leslie Howard, Joan Blondell and Humphrey Bogart has made it to Blu-ray thanks to ClassicFlix. Pamela Anderson's performance in Barb Wire deserved two Golden Globes and Turbine have given us the Uncut version on Blu-ray. Hammer Studios take on the Robin Hood legend with Sword of Sherwood Forest directed by Terence Fisher and stars Peter Cushing as the Sheriff of Nottingham. Twilight Time have brought it to Blu-ray. 1988's D.O.A. is a remake on the original with a charismatic Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan in the respective leads. Kino have done a new upgraded Blu-ray with two commentaries. William Friedkin's first feature film was a silly Monkeeseque romp with Sonny & Cher entitled Good Times - and Kino have brought it to Blu-ray with a fine commentary. I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle is a British comedy-horror that is goofy fun on Blu-ray. Party Line is an 80's sex-thriller on Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome.  88 Film's Green Inferno Blu-ray might appeal to the Cannabalsploitation fans and he early 70's Dutch Blue Movie has been restored and brought to Blu-ray by Cult Epics.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Psycho BD - Hailed as one of the most influential suspense movies of its time, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho had a profound effect on how future filmmakers made movies and shaped audience expectations for generations to come. Turbine Blu-ray Release Date: January 31st, 2019

The Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach BD - Using correspondences and texts written by Johann Sebastian Bach, and read by his wife, Anna Magdalena, filmmakers Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet have crafted one of the most precise, rewarding biopics ever put to screen. Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach’s intense emotional pull can be understood by its status as a musical film in the most thorough sense: its performances—extended sequences set within the very spaces once occupied by Bach himself, as trained performers wear and play materials accurate to the period—are immense, bringing us closer to the sound than was ever thought possible. Blu-ray Release Date: February 16th, 2019

Stand-In (1937) BD - Humphrey Bogart… as a film producer cradling an ever-present Scottish Terrier? Don’t let the dog fool you as the famed tough guy also shows his flair for comedy in Stand-In (1937), a riotous, lacerating satire on the motion picture industry. Blu-ray Release Date: February 16th, 2019

Burning BD - South Korean director/co-writer Lee Chang-dong's unconventional thriller is loosely based on Haruki Murakami's 1992 short story "Barn Burning." Ah-in Yoo stars as Jongsu, a poor young man who falls in love with a beautiful young dancer named Haemi Jong-seo Jun. He becomes angry and insecure when she becomes romantically entangled with Ben (Steven Yeun), an eccentric young millionaire who claims to be occasionally impelled to burn greenhouses. Blu-ray Release Date: March 5th, 2019

De Palma & De Niro: The Early Films BD - Brought together for the first time and each newly restored by Arrow Films especially for this release these three films offer a fascinating insight into the early careers of two American cinema s major talents. Blu-ray Release Date: December 11th, 2018

I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle BD - When a Satanist biker is killed by a gang of Hells Angels, an evil spirit he was summoning possesses his old Norton Commando motorcycle. So, when unsuspecting local courier Nick "Noddy" Oddie becomes the bike's new owner, little does he know that it runs on blood and has a habit for killing Hells Angels and anyone else who gets in its way. Blu-ray Release Date: October 23rd, 2018

Green Inferno BD - Whilst Deodato's original benchmark critiqued the mondo film pseudo-documentary phenomenon, partly instigated by cinematographer and director Antonio Climati, here the focus turns to satirizing the hypocrisy and complexity of CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST itself! Blu-ray Release Date: March 11th, 2019

Blue Movie BD - BLUE MOVIE was the most controversial and talked about Dutch film upon theatrical release - a sensation that brought millions of visitors to cinemas. Produced by Pim de la Parra, and directed by his partner Wim Verstappen, BLUE MOVIE was a breakthrough commercial hit for their company Scorpio Films - and the start of the Golden Years of Dutch cinema, also known as the "Dutch Sex Wave." Blu-ray Release Date: February 12th, 2019

Good Times BD - Pop singers Sonny and Cher are featured in this fluffy film that chronicles the popular duo's ideas for the film in which they are to make their cinematic debut. Much of the story centers around Sonny's movie fantasies as he tries to convince the studio head to use a more interesting script than the one he wants to present. Blu-ray Release Date: September 25th, 2018

Sword of Sherwood Forest BD - Having portrayed Robin Hood on TV for five years, Richard Greene reprises the role in Hammer Films' Sword of Sherwood Forest. This time, Robin does a little undercover work to determine the wicked machinations of the Sheriff of Nottingham (played by Hammer stalwart Peter Cushing). Our Hero and the Merrie Men do their best to foil a plot to kill the Archbishop of Canterbury (Jack Gwillim.) Blu-ray Release Date: December 4th, 2019

The Iceman Cometh BD - In the faded light of Harry Hope's 1912 skid row bar, a group of fallen men, like ghosts haunting the wreckage of their own lives, await the annual arrival of Hickey (Lee Marvin). This year, however, the charismatic salesman brings not the usual rounds of drinks and slaps on the back, but an unwelcome message of sobriety. Hollywood legends Fredric March and Robert Ryan performed alongside relative newcomer Jeff Bridges in a brilliant cinematic experiment that captured the existential dread of O'Neill's play, the capstone of which is Marvin's haunting suggestion of the madman that hides beneath Hickey's ribald, garrulous exterior. Blu-ray Release Date: March 26th, 2019

Party Line BD - Brother and sister Seth and Stacy live a secluded life in their family's beautiful Beverly Hills mansion. But these upper class siblings share a dark and violent hobby of using sexually driven 'party lines' to meet and lure lustful strangers into a deadly ménage à trois, the climax of which is a razor slash to the throat! Blu-ray Release Date: February 26th, 2019

Laura BD - The sleekest of noirs, the chicest of murders, and deliciously twisted--the detective is a necrophiliac, two of the title character's suitors seem gay, and the Laura all the men are vying for is a corpse with no face. Indeed LAURA, goes the genre one further by taking apart the conventions, then putting them back together, and diving wholeheartedly into them for the finale--a cocktail party denouement to name the killer. Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Release Date: January 14th, 2019

D.O.A. (1988) BD - This updated version has Dennis Quaid, an actor with the spark and intelligence to carry off just about anything, as Dexter Cornell - English professor, blocked novelist, murder victim. Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, who directed ''D.O.A.,'' are the flashy, innovative creators of Max Headroom. Here they aim for a stylish mix of the 40's and 80's, beginning with a black and white homage to the older film, in which Mr. Quaid stumbles into a police station to report his own murder. Kino Blu-ray Release date: October 30th, 2018

Sink the Bismarck BD - Sink the Bismarck is a faithful retelling of the British Navy’s attempts to debilitate the German mega-battleship Bismarck. Based on C.S. Forester’s book and directed by Lewis Gilbert (of James Bond film fame) the real-life naval battle is detailed and fascinating as it delves deep into the successes and failures of one small triumph of the war. We are treated to exposure of massive amounts of information leaving character development to take a backseat. Eureka Blu-ray Release Date: March 11th, 2019

Far From Heaven BD - Maverick director Todd Haynes embraces the look and feel of classic Hollywood melodramas of the 1950s in this period drama. Cathy Whitaker (Julianne Moore) and her husband Frank (Dennis Quaid) are a seemingly perfect couple; living in a handsome suburban neighborhood in Hartford, CT in 1957, Cathy and Frank have a beautiful home and two happy, healthy children, while Frank pursues a successful career in sales and Cathy cares for the home. Blu-ray Release Date: March 19th, 2019

Walkabout is a thrilling adventure as well as a provocative rumination on time and civilization. Umbrella Blu-ray Release Date: March, 2019

One of the explorers is a woman who got involved after she traveled from California to marry her fiance whom she hasn't seen in two years. Another man tries to convince her that her fiancé has become an alcoholic idealist obsessed with finding gold in the jungle. Blu-ray Release Date: March 26th, 2019

An Angel at My Table BD - The true story of one of our century's most gifted writers, An Angel At My Table chronicles the life and extraordinary time of Janet Frame (portrayed by award-winner, Kerry Fox). Umbrella Blu-ray Release Date: February 2019

Dawson City - Frozen Time BD - Named as one of the best films of 2017 by more than 100 critics worldwide, Dawson City: Frozen Time pieces together the bizarre true history of a long-lost collection of over 500 nitrate film prints dating from the early 1900s. Discovered buried deep in the permafrost beneath Dawson City, a former Klondike gold rush town, the story they reveal and Morrison's haunting found-footage documentary links that gold rush town to the dawn of cinema and the rise of the modern age. Second Run Blu-ray Release date: February 19th, 2019

The Horse Thief BD - When he made this bold CinemaScope feature with a Tibetan setting 20-odd years ago, the director—-for me, the best and most important of all the “fifth generation” Chinese filmmakers who entered the Beijing Film Academy after the end of the Cultural Revolution and began to have access to a wide range of films from abroad—said he’d made it for the 21st century. Blu-ray Release Date: February 15th, 2019

Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? BD - Sparkling, risqué and delightful, WILL SUCCESS SPOIL ROCK HUNTER? is a bright, knowing satire of Madison Avenue, television and the cult of the movie star! Barb Wire BD - Pamela Anderson is Barb Wire, the sexiest, toughest woman in Steel Harbor - a city marked by chaos and crime - providing a home for a new kind of mercenary. If you’ve got a problem, Barb Wire is the solution. She’ll use any dangerous weapon (including her body) to take what she wants, crossing the line for no man.
