(aka "Paradiso infernale" or "Yellow Dream" or "Cannibal Holocaust 2" or "Cannibal Holocaust II")

Directed by Antonio Climati
Italian 1988

For years fans waited for the release of a sequel to Ruggero Deodato's trendsetting CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (1980) yet it would take almost a decade for THE GREEN INFERNO, also known as CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST 2, to arrive... and it was not, perhaps, what followers of the cycle in Italian nasty native movies were expecting! Whilst Deodato's original benchmark critiqued the mondo film pseudo-documentary phenomenon, partly instigated by cinematographer and director Antonio Climati (MONDO CANE/ SAVAGE MAN, SAVAGE BEAST), here the focus turns to satirizing the hypocrisy and complexity of CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST itself! Directed by Climati, CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST 2 sees some enterprising adventurers traipsing into the Amazon jungle in search of a missing professor and, in the interim, the youngsters encounter some indications that slavery and European colonialism is still robbing the Colombian rain forest blind! A mix of macabre images, scenic locations, castrations and sly in-jokes, CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST 2 introduces some belated bad taste humour into familiar jungle territory and requires immediate reappraisal from tribal terror completists - which is a meal best served in glorious HD by the video nasty enthusiasts at 88 Films!

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

"The Green Inferno" comes to us thanks to 88 Films. The 1.66:1 HD image lies on a dual-layered Blu-ray with a maxed out bitrate. This is a pretty impressive brand new 2K remaster from the original camera negative. Detail is fine, with a thin grain intact. With the exception of a few insert shots, there is a nice consistency to the quality of the image. While there seems to be a little black dot in some of the first few shots, this could be due to an error in the actual lens used during shooting. Colors are vibrant, with the lush jungle showing a wide range of greens and browns. The picture also exhibits depth, with darker scenes not losing much detail in the image. An impressive 2K restoration that apparently utilized extensive cleanup and color correction, that was carried out in the UK.

We are given the choice of watching "Green Inferno" in either the English or Italian language, both with a 24-bit 2.0 linear PCM audio track. The various jungle noises create a nice sense of atmosphere, even with 2.0 channels. The synth-rock score is thanks to Maurizio Dami (Top Line). There are optional English subtitles on this Region Free
Blu-ray from 88 Films. It should be noted that the subtitles tend to differ from the actual English audio, but the gist of the dialogue remains the same. I'm assuming that these newly translated subtitles come from the Italian audio.

The main extra here is "Scenes From Banned Alive: The Rise and Fall of Italian Cannibal Movies", which is composed of 30-minutes of clips from a documentary on the cannibal genre featuring interviews with some of the pioneering directors (Ruggero Deodato, Umberto Lenzi and Sergio Martino.) Mixed into these interviews are scenes from the notorious films mentioned. There are optional subtitles for this extra. Also included is the Italian opening and closing credits, the remastered trailer and a reversible sleeve with the Italian poster design.

"The Green Inferno" is a somewhat different take on the very divisive and very sleazy Italian cannibal genre. For every sequence that 'flips-the-script', there is another one that is somewhat derivative. I most enjoyed a scene where a main character attempts to revive a chimpanzee (as opposed to the usual animal violence/death in these films). That anaconda wrestling scene is impressive as well. While obviously not everyone's bag, I would encourage the sub-genre's fans to check this one out, as it is certainly an outlier of the cannibal canon. The brand new 2K remaster is something to behold.
