Directed by James Foley
USA 1992

101 Films presents acclaimed cult drama Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), widely regarded as one of the finest films of the 90s. Adapted for the screen by David Mamet from his Pulitzer Prize-winning play, the compelling, witty, and endlessly quotable script is delivered with razor-sharp precision by an ensemble cast at the height of their powers.

A group of Chicago real estate salesmen-cum-con artists live on the edge. Life is good for the one on a roll. For the rest, life hangs in the balance. There is no room for losers. A-B-C: Always Be Closing, sell or go under, is the salesman’s mantra. With the pressure on, so begins a rainy night of cutthroat business and shattered lives. Delivering an Academy Award nominated performance. Al Pacino (Scent of A Woman) plays the fast-talking Ricky Roma, alongside Jack Lemmon (Some Like It Hot, The Apartment) giving a phenomenal performance as the veteran Shelley “The Machine” Levene, struggling to keep his neck above water. A star-studded ensemble cast features Alec Baldwin (The Cooler) Ed Harris (Apollo 13, Pollock) and Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine, Argo).

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: 101 Films Blu-ray (June 2024): 101 Films have transferred James Foley's Glengarry Glen Ross to Blu-ray. We compared the ITV Blu-ray from 2012 to the Lionsgate Blu-ray from 2016, HERE - and some frame matches below. We have never owned Shout! Factory's 2020 Blu-ray available HERE. This new transfer improves upon the first two with more balanced color and contrast, more information in the frame and the 101 Films has the highest bitrate. It's fairly obvious that this is the best of the three compared. DoP Juan Ruiz Anchía, used a color scheme of primaries (reds, blues, greens) in the first half of the film, and the remaining has a monochromatic blue-grey scheme that is picked up effectively by the 101 Films Blu-ray

On their Blu-ray, 101 Films use a linear PCM stereo track (24-bit) in the original English language. Glengarry Glen Ross has persistent rain but no violence. The score was by James Newton Howard's (Unbreakable, 2005's King Kong, The Bourne Legacy, 8 Million Ways to Die, Tough Guys, Batman Begins, Waterworld, Outbreak, Signs, I Am Legend, The Lookout, Collateral etc.) jazzy score is excellent. We also get Al Jarreau singing Blue Skies, The Willis Holman Orchestra performing Prelude To A Kiss, Blue Lou performed by The Joe Roccisano Orchestra and Daydream by David Sanborn. All dialogue is clean and clear. 101 Films offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The 101 Films Blu-ray offers the old commentary by director James Foley from 2002 that has been included on all Blu-ray editions. Also included is the older Jack Lemmon commentary. He cites that making this film as one of the highlights of his career ("best cast he has ever worked with",) extols Mamet, states three weeks of rehearsal, Mamet working in a Real Estate office... He is very generous with his praise, takes appropriate pauses and I found it informative. A total gentleman. Repeated from the Shout! Factory Blu-ray are the 1/2 hour conversation with director James Foley, 25-minutes of ”God Bless Ricky Roma” where actor Joe Mantegna remembers working with David Mamet in House of Games. and he was also in the original Broadway cast of Glengarry Glen Ross. Also repeated is the Artisan's 2002 1/2 hour documentary ”A.B.C. (Always Be Closing)” titled for the mantra used in the sales world meaning a salesperson must always focus on closing the deal. We hear from a few salespeople and the video is prefaced with this statement "The film Glengarry Glen Ross has been used to teach real salesmen how to sell and how not to sell! It is also part of a great dramatic tradition that explores the lives of American salesmen". The 1/2 hour Magic Time: A tribute to Jack Lemmon is also from 2002 and has input from John G. Avildsen (Rocky,) James Foley, Peter Gallagher, Chris Lemmon (son), James Lipton and David Seltzer with archival footage of Jack. This was on both Lionsgate and ITV Blu-rays but not on the Shout! Factory. The package includes a limited edition booklet with ‘Death of a F*ckin’ $ale$man: Defining an American Dramatic Tradition’ by Rich Johnson and ‘Glengarry Glen Ross and The All-American Loser’ by Andrew Graves.

James Foley's Glengarry Glen Ross has becomes a cult classic. It actually failed at the box office but has been widely regarded since as one of the best films of the 90s. The lines by Blake (Alec Baldwin), sent to motivate the sales staff, have become the stuff of legend; "Put that coffee down! Coffee's for closers only" and "...we're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac El Dorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired." Baldwin's character was specifically written for the actor and the film, and is not in the Pulitzer Prize winning play. Glengarry Glen Ross is also famous for its unfettered swearing throughout and has Mamet's intentionally stilted language rhythms. The performances are so memorable with the cast playing such foulmouthed, duplicitous, mercenary characters. There are deeply masculine roots in the portrayals. It's a definitive masterpiece of cinema. I am very happy the 101 Films Blu-ray with a bump in a/v and the multitude of supplements including a new booklet. This is easily in the "must own" category for fans of the film.
