Directed by Budd Boetticher
USA 1952
From Budd Boetticher, the outstanding director of Red Ball Express, Wings of the Hawk, 7 Men from Now, The Tall T and Ride Lonesome, comes this classic western starring screen legends Robert Ryan (Day of the Outlaw) and Rock Hudson (Showdown). Post-Civil War Texas hosts a classic tale of brother against brother. After returning from the war, Dan Hammond (Ryan) sees his high hopes fall apart under the pressure of gambling debts. He turns to a life of crime, pitting him against his younger brother Neil (Hudson), the new local marshal. The stupendous cast also includes Julie Adams (Bend of the River), Raymond Burr (Pitfall), John McIntire (Rough Night in Jericho), James Arness (TV’s Gunsmoke), Dennis Weaver (Duel) and Judith Braun (Red Ball Express.) *** Brothers Dan and Neil Hammond return to Texas after the Civil War. Ambitious Dan turns to rustling and then shady land deals to build an empire. Being held for a murder, he is rescued from a lynch mob by Neil, who is now the Marshal, but there is eventually a falling out between the brothers, good triumphing over evil. |

On their
Blu-ray,
Kino use a DTS-HD dual-mono track (16-bit) in the
original English language. It handles the typical western effects (guns
and horses) easily
and sports an uncredited score by
Henry Mancini (Days
of Wine and Roses, Oklahoma
Crude,
Wait
Until Dark,
Operation Petticoat,
Me, Natalie, Mr.
Hobbs Takes a Vacation, Experiment
in Terror, Charade) and
Herman Stein (Six

Island Earth,
It Came From Outer Space,
War Arrow,
Tarantula,

The Incredible Shrinking Man) augmenting the
tension. Kino offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Kino
Blu-ray
Well, I'm a big fan of these older westerns
and, essentially; "you had me at Robert Ryan". Interesting to see
a young Rock Hudson, baddie Raymond Burr, James Arness, Dennis Weaver
(in his first feature) and always beautiful Julie Adams. Horizons West
has the keen story-telling of Budd Boetticher and desirable Ryan as the
'bad brother' cursed with too much ambition. There may be a
Shakespearian angle in there somewhere. The Kino Blu-ray
is a notable step up from SD, has the valuable commentary and is an easy
recommendation to those who appreciate this genre. This is another of
many westerns that I could throw on at any time. |
