Directed by Paul Mazursky
USA 1978

One woman’s journey of self-discovery brings about a warmly human cultural conversation about female liberation, in this wonderfully frank, funny chronicle of changing 1970s sexual politics by Paul Mazursky. When her husband of sixteen years abruptly leaves her for a younger woman, Manhattan gallery worker Erica (a fantastic, Oscar-nominated Jill Clayburgh in her defining role) finds herself alone and adrift—but also newly empowered to explore her needs and desires as she tests the waters of a new relationship with a charismatic artist (Alan Bates.) Candidly addressing issues of sex, intimacy, loneliness, and divorce from an unabashedly feminist perspective, An Unmarried Woman makes the simple but radical assertion that a woman’s most important relationship is the one she has with herself.

***

A wealthy woman from Manhattan's Upper East Side struggles to deal with her new identity and her sexuality after her husband of 16 years leaves her for a younger woman.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Criterion Blu-ray (May 2020): Criterion have transferred Paul Mazursky's An Unmarried Woman to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "New 4K digital restoration". It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate and looks excellent - plenty of visible texture, impressive detail in close-ups, realistic colors, no noise in the very dark scenes - it really has no flaws. The 1080P, in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio provides a very positive HD presentation.

On their Blu-ray, Criterion use a linear PCM mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. There are few aggressive effects and a pleasing, often Latin-themed, score by Bill Conti (The Big Fix, Betrayed, The Seduction of Joe Tynan, Neighbors, The Right Stuff, Rocky, Harry and Tonto, For Your Eyes Only)  sounding supportive and clean in the uncompressed. Criterion offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Criterion Blu-ray includes the audio commentary from 2005 featuring director Paul Mazursky and actor Jill Clayburgh - recorded separately and edited together. Mazursky's discusses Michael Murphy, friend of Woody Allen who came to the 'wrap party', co-producer of An Unmarried Woman, Anthony Ray (son of director Nicholas Ray, who eventually married his step-mom Gloria Grahame), Linda Miller (daughter of Jackie Gleason), Jill Clayburgh discussed her experience - not having to read for the part, being comfortable with nudity etc. It's pretty good. There are new 10-minute interviews with actors Michael Murphy and Lisa Lucas separately and a 1/4 hour interview with author Sam Wasson (Paul on Mazursky) who talks about the work of director Paul Mazursky and the reasons that he considers him an American auteur. It was recorded for the Criterion Collection in Los Angeles in 2020. There are 1 3/4 hour's of audio recordings from June 4th,1980, where director Paul Mazursky speaks to students at a Harold Lloyd Master Seminar at the American Film Institute. There is a trailer and the package has liner notes with an essay by critic Angelica Jade Bastién.

Paul Mazursky's An Unmarried Woman is   a very well-realized dissolution of a marriage and the effects on the wife, her recovery in seeking a new relationship. The beauty of the film is how natural it is - so opposite to the over-produced Hollywood films of today. I thought it was a wonderful choice for Criterion to being to Blu-ray. So nice to revisit after many years. The commentary gave ma a new respect for Mazursky and it's a great inclusion in the package with the new interviews and archival audio recording of the director. Absolutely recommended!
