(aka "Le sénateur" or "La vie privée d'un sénateur" or "A Public Affair" or "The Senator" or "Joe Tynan")

Directed by Jerry Schatzberg
USA 1979

A liberal United States senator, Joe Tynan (Alan Alda) is in over his head with both his work and his home life. Joe sees little of his wife, Ellie (Barbara Harris), due to the demands of his job, and their relationship is further strained when he begins to fall for Karen Traynor (Meryl Streep), a pretty attorney. Working with Karen on a Supreme Court appointment case that could mean a big boost for his career, Joe has to weigh various compromises against staying true to his ideals.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Elephant Films have transferred the late 70's film The Seduction of Joe Tynan to 1080P. It is on a single-layered disc with a lowish bitrate and is riddled with digitization and artifacts. The BD visuals are thin and frail looking very poor in most sequences. There is some low frequency edge-enhancement and it eclipses any grain support. This does not provide an adequate presentation for any discerning home theatre aficionados.

Elephant Films use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original English language. Aside from some rally speeches and crowd reactions there aren't any major effects. The score is by Bill Conti (Neighbors, The Right Stuff, Rocky, Harry and Tonto, For Your Eyes Only) and is reasonably supported via the lossless transfer. Elephant Films add optional French subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

Supplements include a 10-minutes on the film with Jean-Pierre Dionnet - in French only, some trailers - one for The Seduction of Joe Tynan with burned-in French subtitles, credits for the
Blu-ray and second disc DVD.

I have been spoiled by excellent HD transfers and seeing The Seduction of Joe Tynan kinda turned me off the film with its noticeably weak video transfer. The production also seemed dated and tame by today's standards. It is neither a film I would recommend nor a
Blu-ray we would endorse. However, there are plenty of Elephant Film products that we have enjoyed. This just wasn't own of them. Pass.
