Directed by Mark Robson
USA 1960

Mark Robson produces and directs this adaptation of John O’Hara’s novel about an ambitious climber (Paul Newman) who marries a promiscuous, bitchy socialite wife (Joanne Woodward), falls for a nice girl (Ina Balin), and has to deal with the vagaries of his difficult parents (Leon Ames and the sublime Myrna Loy). Featuring a screenplay by Ernest Lehman (North by Northwest, The Sound of Music) and a stupendous score by Elmer Bernstein, available on this Twilight Time release as an isolated track.

***

Alfred Eaton, an ambitious young executive, climbs to the top of New York's financial world as his marriage crumbles. At the brink of attaining his career goals, he is forced to choose between business success, married to the beautiful, but unfaithful Mary and starting over with his true love, the much younger Natalie.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Twilight Time Blu-ray (April 2020): Twilight Time transferred Mark Robson's From the Terrace to Blu-ray. It looks pretty solid with consistent texture. It may have some blue-leaning... which only accentuates Paul Newman's eyes. It is on a dual-layered disc with a high bitrate in the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. I thought the image quality was excellent, with a slight film-like heaviness and impressive grain. The 1080P resolution adeptly supports the marvelous Leo Tover (The Woman on the Beach, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Heiress, The Snake Pit) cinematography.

On their Blu-ray, Twilight Time use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. The original was a 4-track stereo. There are few aggressive effects but a notable score by Elmer Bernstein (The Hallelujah Trail, The Grifters, Birdman of Alcatraz, Love With the Proper Stranger, The Bride at Remagen, The Comancheros, The World of Henry Orient, Kings of the Sun, Hud, To Kill a Mockingbird, Summer and Smoke) - also offered as an isolated option - that supports the film extremely well in the lossless. Twilight Time offer optional English subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

Not much in terms of extras on the Twilight Time Blu-ray. They include a short Foxtone Movie Newsreel, theatrical trailer and has their usual isolated score option (Bernstein) and liner notes by Julie Kirgo.

I loved the fable-like themes of From the Terrace about how wealth and ambition often are at odds with your happiness. Newman is in his 'zone' portraying the unhappy, silver-spooned, independent man - seeking out what he thinks will fulfill him in the shadow of his overbearing father. Versatile director Mark Robson (Champion, The Seventh Victim, Peyton Place, Valley of the Dolls, The Harder They Fall) can helm a film to its most effective experience. I enjoy these 50-60s period of cinema and the Twilight Time Blu-ray provides a very satisfying HD presentation.

NOTE: Limited to 3,000 copies and only $8.95 at Twilight Time's own website HERE.
