Directed by Anatole Litvak
USA 1948
Shocking and highly controversial at the time of release, The Snake Pit broke new ground in Hollywood cinema for its depiction of mental illness and its treatment. Olivia de Havilland (Gone with the Wind; The Heiress), delivers an astounding performance as a young bride who suffers a breakdown and finds herself committed to an asylum.
*** In this psychological drama, Virginia Cunningham (Olivia de Havilland) is confused upon finding herself in a mental hospital, with no memory of her arrival at the institution. Tormented by delusions and unable to even recognize her husband, Robert (Mark Stevens), she is treated by Dr. Mark Kik (Leo Genn), who is determined to get to the root of her mental illness. As her treatment progresses, flashbacks depict events in Virginia's life that may have contributed to her instability. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.
Indicator bring The
Snake Pit to to
Blu-ray
via a "4K remaster from the original negative". It's on a dual-layered
Blu-ray
in 1080P with a max'ed out bitrate. Like many Fox films of this era -
the source is in pristine condition and the 4K restoration looks
fabulous in 1080P. It is in
the original 1.37:1 aspect ratio and beautifully film-like with
impressive contrast and some occasional depth. On my system this looked
exquisite. |
