directed
by Mark Robson
U.S.A. 1956
|
A boxing drama with Bogart (in his last role) typecast as the sports publicist who finally does the right thing and sets out to expose the syndicate, The Harder They Fall bears the hallmark of its producer/writer Philip Yordan all over it. Robson tries vainly to give the movie the look of a thriller with lots of shadows and bleak lighting, but Yordan consistently returns it to the field of melodrama by setting his drama in the home - as Bogart and his wife Sterling agonize over his job of exposing the fixed fights - rather than in the boxing ring. |

ADDITION: Bogart - Columbia
Collection - December 2011: Picture quality doesn't look significantly
improved although the bitrate is higher. There are no subtitles offered
but there are some viable extras. The entire Columbia Bogart Collection
is reviewed by Gregory Meshman
HERE. *** The differences in image quality are a little less pronounced in these editions than in "In a Lonely Place" and "Dead Reckoning". The PAL edition is marginally softer, but it is very slight indeed. Again we have more audio and subtitle options in the PAL version, extras and menus are exact. The majority of film fans will be content if they own the PAL edition, but Bogie aficionados may want to upgrade to the NTSC. |
