The Bruce Lee Legacy Collection [Blu-ray]
NOTE: Criterion's Blu-ray Boxset of Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits [ 7 Blu-ray Set ] is compared HERE
The Big Boss (1971) Fist of Fury (1972)
The Way of the Dragon (1972)
Game of Death (1978)
This box set includes four of the films that
would make Bruce Lee one of the most important martial artists ever
to grace the screen. The set includes The Big Boss, Fist
Of Fury, The Way Of The Dragon and Game Of Death.
Also included are two documentaries Bruce Lee: The Legend (and the
original version Bruce Lee: The Man, The Legend) and I Am
Bruce Lee plus a bonus disc with over two hours of bonus content
exclusive to this set. NOTE: New Blu-rays for The Big Boss, Fist Of Fury, The Way Of The Dragon. Contrary to speculation circulating on the Internet, the original set did contain hi-def masters of the first three feature films. However, after comments from fans who had received early copies of our set, Shout! Factory discovered that our sources were not the recently restored transfers used for the Blu-rays in Hong Kong and Japan, but rather the original masters done a few years ago in Canada. Shout Factory therefore acquired the improved masters (the master for Game of Death was not appreciably different), and have included them on this new set, for a truly definitive Bruce Lee collection. |

Firstly, kudos to Shout! Factory for going to the trouble of obtaining the better, Asian, Masters and waiting to release this Blu-ray package properly. Video: We've already compared each individual release - posting matching screen captures, commenting on a/v and extras here: The Big Boss, Fist Of Fury, The Way Of The Dragon and Game of Death. Please visit those comparisons for a more detailed review of those particular 1080P renderings. But to give a general view. These are equally robust, technically, to the Kam & Ronson corresponding Blu-rays - expect for The Way Of The Dragon where Shout! Factory produce a strong dual-layered transfer. Generally while they look similar - skin tones cool and look significantly more realistic. Otherwise these are all dual-layered with supportive bitrates and no manipulation that we could determine. These films never looks pritine after production and this is the best we are likely to get for these four Bruce Lee films. Audio offers lossless bumps with multiple options including the original and English DUBs. All 4 have optional English subtitles and the Blu-ray discs are all region 'A'-locked. We have reviewed the extras on the Blu-rays on each individual comparisons. Each offer a Mike Leeder commentary (with some audio mix issues) but are generally quite good. There are also alt-openings, endings, trailers, TV Spots and Stills galleries plus a good collection of interviews with Gene Lebell, Tung Wai, Yuen Wah, Sammo Hung, Simon Yam, Wong Jing, Jon Benn etc. .
Aside from the four DVDs of the feature films (with the extras from the BDs) there are also 3 Bonus DVDs (labeled discs 9, 10 and 11). DVD disc 9 has the feature documentaries - Leonard Ho's 1977 Bruce Lee: The Legend (1:34:05) and Shih Wu's 1973 Bruce Lee: The Man, The Legend (1:22:45) from an Asian viewpoint. On disc 10 there is Pete McCormack's entertaining 2012 documentary I am Bruce Lee (1:26:04) with some supplements including 12 minutes of Backyard Training - Bruce Lee's Personal Films as well as his Hollywood Audition. Bonus DVD (disc 11) has more interviews with Bob Wall, discussions with Dan Inosanto, a bio piece - Legacy of the Dragon and a 50 minute Bruce Lee Remembered with new Interviews with Anthony Delongis, Byron Mann, Daniel Nguyen, Director Jason Evans and Jason McNiel plus another 45-minutes of Fist of Fury Interviews with Nora Miao, Riki Hashimoto, Jun Katsumura. Almost 3-hours on this last disc alone. There are some things to gripe about - the absence of Enter the Dragon for instance will bother some. I've heard others complain about the image quality. But as for the latter there is not much Shout! Factory could do - these are the best sources available for these films and I see technically strong transfers without digital manipulation. You can't really blame them and in-motion these DO look, as well as sound, improved! I would have liked to see some of the better Green Hornet episodes included but perhaps that is a stretch. Shout! Factory have gone beyond the call of duty on the extras - and it is all housed in a beautiful book. Yes, I enjoyed the heck out of seeing these for the umpteenth time and the supplements are very much appreciated - we recommend!

(aka "Jing wu men" or "The Chinese Connection" or "The School of Chivalry" or "The Iron Hand" )
directed
by Wei Lo
Hong Kong 1972
The raw, powerful fighting skills of Bruce Lee have never
been so potently portrayed as in Fist of Fury (a.k.a. The
Chinese Connection)! This classic tale of a student avenging his
master's death rises to higher cinematic levels thanks to its
charged setting of 1908 Shanghai, when Japanese-Chinese tensions
were at their most explosive. Chen Zhen (Bruce Lee) arrives back
in Shanghai to attend the funeral of his master, famed boxer Ho
Yuan Chia, founder of the Ching Wu Martial Arts School. Days
later, the grieving school receives an anti-Semitic message from
the Japanese Association, and Chen Zhen storms over to vent his
pent-up fury. His actions spark a power struggle in Shanghai,
which is further complicated by the shocking revelation that his
master was poisoned! Flying fists and flailing bodies are the
result of Chen Zhen's righteous fury in Fist of Fury, an
emotional and exhilarating kung-fu drama that showcases Bruce
Lee at his absolute best!
*** A film from the Shaw Brothers' reliable action unit of director Chang Cheh (obviously relieved to be away from costume heroics) and acting duo Ti Lung and David Chiang, that turns out to be one of the funniest and most invigorating of their output: a spoofy foray into the gangster-controlled world of Thai boxing (it was partly shot in Bangkok), mock heroism, and a sub-Pimpernel search for a missing brother. Good use is made of locations, the ringside boxing sequences, and some well-handled street fighting. |

(aka "Meng long guojiang" or "Fury of the Dragon" or "Return of the Dragon" or "Revenge of the Dragon" )
directed
by Bruce Lee
Hong Kong 1972
Known in the west as Return of the Dragon, Bruce
Lee's The Way of the Dragon is another classic martial arts film
featuring the Dragon at the peak of his powers! Bruce Lee is Tang
Lung, a Hong Kong expatriate in Italy who gets the opportunity to
use his fists when local thugs begin muscling in on the local
Chinese restaurant. It's a simple exchange: the thugs set foot in
the restaurant, and Tang Lung cuts loose with a flurry of kicks and
punches designed to inflict the maximum amount of damage with the
minimum amount of effort. Then, more fighting ensues. The Way of the Dragon co-stars popular starlet Nora Miao, and is a true tour-de-force for Bruce Lee. Not only did he star in the film, but he also wrote, produced, and directed - and this is in addition to his expected action choreography duties. The results of his labor are a wildly entertaining martial arts film that's sure to make kung-fu fans of all ages grin from ear-to-ear. Most famously, The Way of the Dragon features a dramatic showdown between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in the confines of Rome's ancient Colosseum! |

(aka "Goodbye Bruce Lee: His Last Game of Death" or "Si wang you ju")
directed
by Robert Clouse
USA 1978
Star Bruce Lee died before this film was completed, thus the producers were forced to pad out the running time with outtakes and alternate shots. They also lifted chunks of footage from Enter the Dragon and Return of the Dragon. The finished product finally hit the screens in 1978, five years after Lee's death. The film's finale pits Lee against such formidable opposition as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Chuck Norris. |
