Directed by Buzz Kulik
USA 1980

The final film of screen icon Steve McQueen (The Great Escape, Bullitt, The Getaway) shows the dynamic talent of the late, great actor in one of his most memorable roles: the true story of Ralph “Papa” Thorson, a modern-day bounty hunter. Thorson’s exploits are detailed as he pursues a number of fugitives who have skipped bail. The chase comes full circle when he becomes the quarry of a vengeful psychopath (Tracey Walter, The Silence of the Lambs). McQueen’s multi-dimensional performance as Thorson, a man born in the wrong age, is counterpoint to the explosive action in The Hunter. Directed by Buzz Kulik (Warning Shot, Shamus) and featuring Eli Wallach (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly), Kathryn Harrold (Raw Deal), LeVar Burton (TV’s Star Trek: The Next Generation) and Ben Johnson (The Wild Bunch).

***

During his long career, bounty hunter Ralph "Papa" Thorson has caught over 5,000 criminals. Now, while he is working on apprehending fugitives in Illinois, Texas and Nebraska, he himself is being hunted by a psychotic killer.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (February 2023): Kino have transferred Buzz Kulik's The Hunter to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "Brand New 2022 HD Master – From a 2022 4K Scan of the Original Camera Negative". It, mostly, looks impressive in 1080P with only a few softer instances that are probably part of the source. Colors are bright (with a few shifts - LeVar Burton's shirt), depth and pleasing contrast. It's on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate and looks solid - an accurate representation of the original camera negative source.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. The Hunter has aggressive sequences involving guns, cars, dynamite and combine harvester. There is some impacting bass response. The score was by the iconic Michel Legrand (Breezy, Cleo From 5 to 7, Castle Keep, La Piscine, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Young Girls of Rochefort, America as Seen By a Frenchman, A Woman is a Woman, Ice Station Zebra) sounding supportive in the lossless transfer. Kino offer optional English subtitles (see sample below) on their Region 'A'-locked Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by film historians Steve Mitchell and Nathaniel Thompson. They discuss the concept of the 'bounty hunter' discussing films like Midnight Run. They talk about McQueen having good comedic sense and always effective with small props as well as his effortless style of acting. They reference critics who did not appreciate The Hunter. It's another great commentary although I miss the input of Howard S. Berger - the third part of the usual trifecta - and wish him the best. Also included is a theatrical trailer, 2 TV Spots and a weak VHS Trailer. The package has an O-card sleeve and reversible artwork (see below.)

Buzz Kulik's The Hunter is Steve McQueen's final role before his untimely death in November of that year at only 50 - a heart attack from complications of Cancer. The Hunter was also the last theatrical film made by director Kulik. The Hunter was based on Christopher Keane's biography of the real Ralph "Papa" Thorson (played by McQueen.) McQueen carries the film and I will watch just about anything with his 'cool antihero persona'. The Kino Blu-ray offers a lot, eclipsed by the Imprint BD with a different commentary (Jason Ney), and a documentary on McQueen - but it is pricier. At the writing of this review the Kino Blu-ray is 40% off and I think that makes this a decent purchase for fans.
