Directed by Jonathan Demme
USA 1988

“Everybody loves Angela…but Angela’s married to da mob!” In a star-making performance, Michelle Pfeiffer (Scarface and The Age of Innocence) is suburban mafia housewife Angela de Marco in Jonathan Demme’s hit comedy Married to the Mob. When her unfaithful husband Frank “The Cucumber” (Alec Baldwin, Miami Blues and Beetlejuice) is iced by his boss Tony “The Tiger” Russo (Dean Stockwell, Blue Velvet and Paris, Texas), Angela flees her cloistered existence on Long Island for the big city, with several interested parties in hot pursuit: Tony, who’s smitten with Angela, Tony’s insanely jealous wife Connie (Mercedes Ruehl, The Fisher King and The Warriors) and FBI Agent Mike Downey (Matthew Modine, Full Metal Jacket and TV’s Stranger Things), who believes Angela is the key to locking Tony up for a very long time.

In between the beloved screwball thriller Something Wild and the Academy Award-winning The Silence of the Lambs, acclaimed auteur Demme helmed this sublime blend of madcap shenanigans, crime and social commentary, the type of genre balancing act he perfected throughout his varied and distinctive career. Inspired equally by the comedies of Preston Sturges and the real-life crimes of John Gotti, the screenplay by Barry Strugatz and Mark R. Burns is one of the great cinematic satires of the American mafia. It’s vividly brought to life by Demme, his steady creative collaborators—cinematographer Tak Fujimoto, editor Craig McKay and production designer Kristi Zea, a very game cast and a typically lights out soundtrack, featuring David Byrne, New Order, Q. Lazzarus, Debbie Harry, The Feelies, Tom Tom Club, Brian Eno and more!

Angela de Marco is fed up with her gangster husband's line of work and wants no part of the crime world. When her husband is killed for having an affair with the mistress of mob boss Tony "The Tiger" Russo, Angela and her son depart for New York City to make a fresh start. Unfortunately, Tony has set his sights upon Angela -- and so has an undercover FBI agent looking to use her to bust Tony.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Fun City Editions Blu-ray (December 2022): Fun City Editions have transferred Jonathan Demme's Married to the Mob to Blu-ray. Both editions in US and UK are the exact same with only different region codes and Brit packaging's BBFC age rating symbol ('15'). It is cited as being "restored in 2K from its original 35mm interpositive". The image quality is about as good as it gets considering the less-resilient 80's stock. Colors have some depth and the presentation is consistent in this 1080P transfer. It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. It's quite a colorful film with plenty of 'bling' in junky jewelry and female costumes. There was a Kino Blu-ray HERE that came out in 2014 but is now out-of-print.

NOTE: We have added 60 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Fun City Editions use a linear PCM stereo track (24-bit) in the original English language. Married to the Mob has aggressive moments that come through with modest depth and a score credited to David Byrne (The Last Emperor, True Stories, Young Adam.) There is plenty of other music including the opening of Rosemary Clooney (Mambo Italiano), and New Order (a Demme favorite), The Voodooiet Corporation, Sinéad O'Connor, Chris Isaak, Lemon Lime, Tom Tom Club, Brian Eno, Debbie Harry and much more. sounding clean with consistent dialogue in the lossless transfer. Fun City Editions offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'A' (in US) / 'B' (in UK) Blu-ray.

The Fun City Editions Blu-ray offers a new commentary by Danielle Henderson and Millie De Chirico of the I Saw What You Did podcast. They talk about the cast - having fond memories of Married to the Mob, Jonathan Demme and the music chosen for the film - generally speaking as true fans (they adore Mercedes Ruehl) - complimenting each other well in the commentary. “It Barreled into My Life” is a 1/2 hour interview with star Mercedes Ruehl. She is the recipient of several awards, including an Oscar, a Golden Globe Award, a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award, two Obie Awards, and two Outer Critics Circle Awards and is known for her leading performance in the play Lost in Yonkers (1990) and a supporting performances in The Fisher King and The Warriors.Writing Married to the Mob” is a 29-minute interview with writers Barry Strugatz and Mark R. Burn who also have shared writing credits on 1989's She-Devil. “A Simple Appreciation of Life” is a newly filmed 22-minute interview with star Matthew Modine who talks about the production, cast and Demme. There is a trailer and image gallery plus the package has a booklet with new essays by writer and podcaster Jourdain Searles and DJ and writer Margaret Barton-Fumo. There is a reversible sleeve.

Jonathan Demme's Married to the Mob has a stacked cast starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Matthew Modine, Alec Baldwin, Dean Stockwell, Nancy Travis, Charles Napier, Joan Cusack, Mercedes Ruehl, Oliver Platt etc.. Angela (Pfeiffer) attempts to break away from 'the Mob' after her philandering husband (Baldwin) is caught with the big boss's (Stockwell) mistress Karen (Nancy Travis.) Matthew Modine (playing FBI agent Mike Downey) has them all under surveillance. It has screwball-ish comedic situations including farcical Godfather-ish lines and New Yorker / New Jersey personality exaggerations. Pfeiffer is a camera magnet with excellent comedic timing. It's quite an enjoyable film helmed by Demme with great music. The Fun City Editions Blu-ray offers a new commentary, new interviews, a booklet and more. It's a superior-crafted comedy to throw in the player any night. Certainly recommended!
