(aka "Un angelo per Satana")

Directed by Camillo Mastrocinque
Italy 1966

In the final film of her Italian Gothic period, the legendary Barbara Steele (BLACK SUNDAY) stars in one of the most startling erotic shockers of her entire career: When a cursed statue is recovered from a villa's lake, a young heiress (Steele) will inflict a torrent of depraved seduction and homicidal madness on the local village. Anthony Steffen (THE NIGHT EVELYN CAME OUT OF THE GRAVE), Claudio Gora (DANGER: DIABOLIK) and Marina Berti (NIGHT TRAIN MURDERS) co-star in a EuroHorror classic featuring Steele in all her mid-'60s glory (DVD Drive-In), co-written and directed by Camillo Mastrocinque (CRYPT OF THE VAMPIRE) and scanned in 2K from the original negative - with both the Italian and thought-lost English tracks - recently discovered in a Rome vault.

***

At the end of the 19th century, in a little Italian village by a lake an old statue is recovered. Soon a series of crimes start and the superstitious people of the village believe that the statue carries an ancient malediction.

ADDITION: Severin Films Blu-ray (November 2021): Severin Films have transferred Camillo Mastrocinque's An Angel for Satan to Blu-ray. It is cited as being "scanned in 2K from the original negative".

This is the first time I recall this Barbara Steele title having any type of English-language digital release... and it looks very impressive. It is stated that it was "recently discovered in a Rome vault." Sublime contrast support a crisp even 1080P visuals. There is plenty of depth, tight detail - notable in the close-ups - and a blemish-free HD presentation which sports the English-language credits. Bravo Severin!

On their Blu-ray, Severin Films use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono tracks (24-bit) in both English and Italian language options. Both have modestly effective DUB'ing with minor sync issues. An Angel for Satan has a few potent screams, shrieks and minor violence that come through with modest depth and clean support of the high-end. The score is credited to Francesco De Masi (Sartana's Here... Trade Your Pistol for a Coffin Kill Them All and Come Back Alone, The Murder Clinic, Private Vices, Public Virtues, The Hanging Woman, The New York Ripper) certainly adding some flavor to the flow. Severin Films offer optional English subtitles (SDH and Italian translation - see samples below) on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Severin Films Blu-ray offer two commentaries. The first is by actress Barbara Steele with David Del Valle and David Gregory of Severin. I recall the pairing of Steele and Del Valle on the Blu-rays of The Crimson Cult. An Angel for Satan was her final Italian film. She recalls going to Italy for Black Sunday after Mario Bava saw her picture in 'Life' magazine. They discuss the dream-like quality of the film and her recollections of the production, Anthony Steffen, her marriage to James Poe and her love of Italy among many other interesting topics including disputing a comment Bava about requesting nudity as stated in Tim Lucas's book Mario Bava: All the Colors of the Dark. There is a second commentary with Kat Ellinger, author of “Daughters Of Darkness”. She hails the Gothic milieu of An Angel for Satan - tropes including evil or possessed women and her usual astute analysis comparing it to similar films of the era. There is also an interview with actor Vassili Karis ('Dario - the Teacher' in the film.) It runs about 20-minutes - he was in a number of Hercules movies, Return of Sabata, Giallo in Venice etc. The interview is entitled "The Devil Statue" and he shares details of director Mastrocinque. Severin also include an odd 1967 10-minute short "Barbara and Her Furs" starring Steele and with a partial commentary by her that her fans will appreciate. I also found on the Blu-ray; Camillo Mastrocinque directed the 1962 omnibus comedy I motorizzati. In it there is an episode in which one of Italy's most popular comedy actors of the era, Ugo Tognazzi, goes to see a horror movie. The movie is Bava's Black Sunday starring Barbara Steele. It runs 2-minutes. Lastly are two trailers - including an, extended one without opening audio.

Camillo Mastrocinque's An Angel for Satan is dripping with Gothic beauty and Barbara Steele is at her most radiant. She's gorgeous with suggested nudity but her sexy cat-like eyes reveal much more. She plays both Harriet Montebruno and Belinda - not dissimilar to Black Sunday where she played the dual roles of Asa and Princess Katia Vajda. She gets to be heartless and manipulative declaring "I want all men to worship me". Solid gold from a favorite screen presence of 60's Italian genre cinema.  I am so pleased to have in such stellar a/v including the English-language track option for An Angel for Satan. The Severin Films Blu-ray is a huge winner and we can warmly recommend!
