Directed by Bob Kellett
United Kingdom / Spain / Canada 1976

Comedy icons Leslie Phillips and Terry-Thomas set new levels of bounderism and caddishness in this wickedly funny, mid-'70s sex comedy set on the Mediterranean island of Menorca! Directed by Bob Kellett and co-starring Sue Lloyd, Spanish Fly is featured as a brand-new High Definition remaster from original film elements in its original theatrical aspect ratio.

Sir Percy de Courcy feels dejected. His cunning wheeze to make some fast cash by buying up 100,000 gallons of local plonk to sell at a vast profit comes adrift when even he has to admit it tastes foul. But when his chauffeur adds a certain local ingredient to improve the taste, it turns the wine into a potent aphrodisiac!

***

British sex comedy. Sir Percy de Courcy (Terry-Thomas) accidentally turns some poor tasting wine into an aphrodisiac when his old school chum, Mike Scott (Leslie Phillips) arrives with a photographer and several gorgeous models.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Network Blu-ray (June 2022): Network have transferred Bob Kellett's Spanish Fly to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from "a brand-new High Definition remaster from original film elements". I won't argue - it looks quite pleasing in 1080P. This includes the "Fullscreen" (they should really change that), "as-filmed version" which is quite pictureboxed (boo!) Stick with the crisper 1.66:1 ratio. It's pleasingly sharp if colors may have faded a shade. Depth is apparent and the HD presentation looked solid on my system.

On their Blu-ray, Network use a linear PCM dual-mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. Spanish Fly has no demonstrative aggressive moments. The score is by Ron Goodwin (Hitchcock's Frenzy, Village of the Damned, The Day of the Triffids, Operation Crossbow) and supports the comedy well in the uncompressed transfer. Some may recognize Fly Me sung by Geraldine. Network offer optional English subtitles, in a small white font, on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The Network Blu-ray include as brand-new 8-minute interview with 70-year old actor Nina Zuckerman (Vampire Circus.) A brilliant holiday in Menorca. There is also a 50-minute long image gallery featuring a music suite of Ron Goodwin's original score. Lastly is a theatrical trailer and a limited edition booklet written by Adrian Smith. There is also a PDF Pressbook in the root in the Blu-ray disc with some bios and nudie photos.

Bob Kellett's Spanish Fly is quasi-notable for the inclusion of 'Nadiuska' - a German-born Spanish model with translucent eyes - born Roswicha Bertasha Smid Honczar (there's a mouthful) in Bavaria to Polish and Russian parents, she appeared in a number of sex comedies in the 70s. There is also Sally Farmiloe - who bore a high resemblance to Britt Ekland (see THIS from the gallery) and acquired fame for her affair with the politician Lord Archer from 1996 to 1999. There is also Scottish-born Andrea Allan who appeared in magazine spreads for both Playboy and Penthouse as well as roles in a couple of Carry On films. She looks very different with purple hair in the UFO TV series. Also is Sue Lloyd (The Ipcress File, Corruption, Revenge of the Pink Panther, The Stud and The Bitch.) She had to get drunk before her nude scenes. I was keen on the unknown Jaleh Haddah. Then there's the cast credits that read as Leslie Phillips versus Terry-Thomas. So, yeah cut, sexy ladies, some T+A but it may have more nostalgic value than anything else. It's a fun, less-remarkable, film and the Network Blu-ray does a great job with their dual-presentation and scattered extras. To each his own.
