Directed by Steven Soderbergh
USA 1998

George Clooney (Ocean’s Eleven) and Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers) ignite the screen in this criminally cool crime caper from director Steven Soderbergh (The Limey). Meet Jack Foley, the most successful bank robber in the country. On the day he busts out of jail, he finds himself stealing something far more precious than money… Karen Sisco’s heart. She’s smart. She’s sexy. And unfortunately for Jack, she’s a Federal Marshal. Now, they’re willing to risk it all to find out if there’s more between them than just the law. Screenwriter Scott Frank (Get Shorty) earned an Oscar nomination for his slick, snappy script based on the novel by Elmore Leonard (Jackie Brown). The stacked cast includes Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction), Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda), Dennis Farina (Manhunter), Albert Brooks (Lost in America), Nancy Allen (Blow Out), Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich), Isaiah Washington (True Crime), Steve Zahn (Rescue Dawn), Paul Calderon (King of New York), Luis Guzmán (Boogie Nights), Viola Davis (Fences), Wendell B. Harris Jr. (Road Trip) and uncredited cameos by Michael Keaton (Batman Returns) and Samuel L. Jackson (The Hateful Eight).

Meet Jack Foley, a smooth criminal who bends the law and is determined to make one last heist. Karen Sisco is a federal marshal who chooses all the right moves and all the wrong guys. Now they're willing to risk it all to find out if there's more between them than just the law.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION (July 1st, 2022): We have added 4 matched 4K UHD captures to the comparison. It is a shade brighter and has more, fine, consistent grain. Color balance may be a modicum superior but it is not a wide separation from the new 1080P. It looks exceptionally strong in-motion. The audio is more robust than the Kino Blu-ray, the commentary is still there - but in lossless and the subtitles have a bolder font. This is a very strong 2160P image.

ADDITION (June 2022): Kino have transferred Steven Soderbergh's Out of Sight to Blu-ray and a 4K UHD transfer (with the Blu-ray included) - the latter presented with an HDR pass. We won't be able to obtain 4K 2160P captures, probably, till after the release date - a function of the encode. This is presently true of almost all 4K UHD transfers. We will add them here when accessible. The 1080P should give you an idea of the rendering as it will be from the same source - cited as being "Brand New Dolby Vision HDR Master – From 4K Scan of the Original Camera Negative".

In 2011, Universal produced a Blu-ray with a VC-1 encode of Out of Sight (reviewed HERE.) We've compared some, frame-matched, captures to this 2022 Kino 1080P - with a, superior, AVC encode. Looking closely, the differences are fairly dramatic. The 11-year old Universal Blu-ray is vertically stretched (abnormally thinner faces) - something that becomes more apparent with side-by-side comparisons (see larger linked images below.) The Kino also has richer colors (see Catherine Keener's top that shifts from orange to bright red). Lastly, it looks as though Universal did not include the filtering (see Jennifer Lopez in the trunk with a golden hue) - similar to their omissions on Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing - and Soderbergh's Traffic Blu-rays. There is healthy grain on Kino's new HD presentation. It's a bona-fide advancement over the Universal.

The 4K UHD has even richer colors and warmer skin tones than the Kino 1080P. It is a triple-layered UHD100 disc with a very high bitrate. This 4K looks magnificent on my system. Outdoor scenes in the prison yard are brilliant via the 2160P with deep colors and plenty of depth. It.is.gorgeous.

NOTE: We have added 58 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE. As stated we will add 4K UHD captures when they are accessible.

On their Blu-ray, and 4K UHD disc, Kino offer the choice of a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround or 2.0 channel stereo tracks (24-bit) in the original English language. Out of Sight has many aggressive moments from guns and fights to car crashes - and there are some deft separation instances exported by surround.   The score is by David Holmes (I am Belfast, Hunger, Ocean’s Eleven) staing he has several influences, including Lalo Schifrin, Quincy Jones, Dean Martin, and Miles Davis. There are also some eclectic choice sampling including Ain't That a Kick In the Head and Things performed by Dean Martin, Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man, The Isley Brothers' Fight the Power (Part 2), Primavera performed by Juan García Esquivel, Al Cooper's Let Me Call You Sweetheart and Walter Wanderley's organ version of The Girl from Ipanema among other songs instilling a fun mood. It all sounds buoyant, clean, tight and consistent in the lossless transfers. Kino offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray, and Region FREE 4K UHD disc.

The Kino Blu-ray offers the same audio commentary sequences by director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Frank - as found on previous digital editions. This is available on both Kino's new Blu-ray and 4K UHD discs. The rest of the supplements are only on the Blu-ray; Inside OUT OF SIGHT is an original 22-minute documentary on the making of Out of Sight. It features behind-the-scenes footage and interview snippets with Soderbergh, Clooney, Lopez, Albert Brooks, Don Cheadle, Ving Rhames, Steve Zahn, Elmore Leonard and Scott Frank. There are also the 22-minutes of deleted scenes - both extras have been on other editions including Universal's Blu-ray. Only new is the two theatrical trailers - newly mastered in 2K.

Steven Soderbergh's Out of Sight is the first of multiple collaborations between Soderbergh and Clooney. This crime-comedy-romance has a stacked cast with Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, Dennis Farina, Samuel L. Jackson (uncredited,) Nancy Allen, Steve Zahn, Catherine Keener, Albert Brooks and Luis Guzmán. Appearing briefly is Michael Keaton, as the same named character (Ray Nicolette) - part of Elmore Leonard's universe which includes Tarantino's Jackie Brown (based on Leonard's novel "Rum Punch") - made one year earlier. Even with its comedic elements it would fit in many definitions of Neo Noir. Out of Sight led to a spin-off TV series with Carla Gugino, as a U.S. Deputy Marshal, entitled Karen Sisco (Lopez's character in Out of Sight.) This is a slick, gorgeous, action-packed, witty film worthy of its high rating. I am very happy that the Kino Blu-ray, and notably the 4K UHD transfer, - both have improved the video so demonstratively. It's a film that should look its very best for home theater consumption - this 4K UHD does. Fans of Steven Soderbergh's Out of Sight should pick it up and revel at the new image quality. Strongly recommended!

I probably shouldn't have waited till Summer - the slowest season for physical media - before addressing our current financial difficulties on DVDBeaver - and, hence, having a Patron Drive.

We are behind on our bills as commissions continue to decline and each month we have a net-loss of patrons - gaining only a couple while losing a dozen or more. We need about 100 to stay alive. I have the dark thought of what will be our very last review after 20-years. I don't want to 'throw in the towel' - even if it is, appropriately, Raging Bull 4K UHD. I love our current Patrons - and thank them for our existence to-date. Please consider keeping us around with a couple of dollars or more each month (your pocket change!) so we can continue to do our best in giving you timely, thorough reviews, calendar updates and detailed comparisons. You will then receive our weekly Newsletter sent to your Inbox every Monday morning, you can participate in our Silent Auctions and have access to over 100,000, personally selected, Blu-ray and 4K UHD film screen captures. Thank your consideration and assistance in the past.
