directed by Barry Sonnenfeld
USA 1995
Chili Palmer is a gangster who collects money and who
when he comes across z-grade filmmaker Zimm, decides that he wants to drop
being a gangster and become a producer; which more or less is the same.
Originally Travolta turned the role down, but was talked into taking it by
Quentin Tarantino, and subsequently gives one of the best performances of
his career. Supported by a stunning cast, Rene Russo, Gene Hackman, Danny
DeVito, Dennis Farina, Delroy Lindo, to name some, “Get Shorty” is a
classic by its own right. Thanks for writer Scott Frank, who also wrote
“Out of Sight” and who understood, that the most important element in
Leonard’s writing was the characters, not the story, the very complicated
plot moves effortless past us.
”Get Shorty” is one of the best films ever to be made about Hollywood and
making movies. A gem of filmmaking.

The image is a new HD transfer, but rather
disappointing. Especially the colours are not as clear and defined as
one could wish for. Its soft, there are at times annoying edge
enhancements and its somewhat dark. Where the R1 has a DTS track, the R2 only comes with a 5.1 Dolby Digital, but then also in all major European languages. the 5.1 Dolby Digital track is nevertheless good, dialogue is clear and the score sounds great. The additional material begins with an audio commentary by Sonnenfeld. A very informative and entertaining commentary, covering the entire production process with many small anecdotes. Following this on disc two comes a series of featurettes. While there is a lot of backclapping, they are quiet good. Then comes my favorite scene of the film, which sadly is a deleted one, the "Graveyard" scene, which formerly was on the laserdisc. Its all rounded up with a party reel and a nice little Easter egg. |
